Fly Cathay Pacific (CX) using AA miles. Directs out of EWR and JFK. Business class and first both open up very close to departure. Best way to check inventory is with a JAL FF account (just set one up on their website), otherwise you need to call an agent with AA to have them look
Definitely don’t book with BA. Book with AA but since you can’t see CX availability on aa.com you have to use the JAL or BA web sites to find availability released to partners by CX. The trouble with BA is that its web site often shows phantom availability which is why BCG1 suggested JL.
If you don’t see what you want, keep checking. If CX doesn’t sell business or first seats, they will open them to partners as it gets closer to departure. These seats are dependent on sales and their yield management software, and will not be opened 330 days out.
Would i book through cathay pacific website and my AA points would show up automatically?
50k miles might get you to Miami if you connect in DFW overnight. 120k chase points will redeem for $1800 if you have CSR. Maybe you can get a direct flight for that. Go on their website and type in your dates and see if there’s anything for that price.
Bcg 1 is wrong. Use British airways to check inventory. Also pretty wrong about business / first opening up close to departure date. Fairly random in my experience with CX.
M1: I believe you are incorrect. Didn’t realize that BA now showed all of CX inventory like JL does, but FlyerTalk’s master thread of AA award inventory on CX still indicates that they release inventory close-in as well. I’ve snagged multiple F trips on CX in that manner

RDM, not EQM. Could have used them on other flights
Award inventory opens up 330 days out. Start looking ASAP and don’t listen to bcg 1
Just checked british airways. Roundtrip Business class on Cathay out of jfk is 210k points and $280. Way too much
I might as well just do united newark to hk for $800 round trip economy using Chase ultimate reward
Business to HKG using United saver is 90k one way using economy saver 40k one way.
AA Business saver is 70k
And it's not a bad flight. Lga to dfw and then dfw HKG on the 777 which is very good
Book through AA to use AA points, and get the AA codeshare operated by CX JFK-HKG.
Alternatively book through Chase with points. I just bought JFK-HKG roundtrip for <$800 economy.
You search for Cathay award availability on the British Airways Avíos website. Then given AA a call with the date/flight details and have them book it using Advantage pesos.
What dates did you pick AP1?
Lol. Its nice getting some help once in a while.
Ive actually never flown business class on international flights before. Is it really worth it?
Depends on how you value your comfort, but I find business totally work it. More likely to sleep, better food/booze, lounge so that you can shower/get comfortable before flying
Find business savers don’t do regular
EY OP only if you like lie flat(or ish) seating, gift bags, and awesome food....
US to Asia is worth it in business class. Northeastern US to Western Europe is much less necessary - with a good tailwind you can do JFK-LHR in only an hour more than JFK-SFO.
