Trying to get back to my first love, criminal law, and get a steady stream of cases. Any advice on marketing? Unbundled Attorney and Lawyer.com seem to be the leads driven preferences. I actually built up a mighty little family practice with Unbundled Attorney but I want to get back to my roots. I was a prosecutor for a year in 2016 before chasing the money in civil practice but now want to pivot to more criminal. Any insight would be appreciated

Can’t decide between reporting + technical roles vs corporate accounting roles. Coming out of audit and I like both aspects. Has anyone tried both sides and have any insights? Does one of these have higher salary potential? Does corporate accounting give you a higher chance of reaching a controller position since you’re actually in the GL, whereas technical + reporting will probably have you in a specialized group in larger companies?

What are good sectors to specialise in if I wanted to keep my options open?

I have an interview for an in house position (only attorney) at a small non-profit focused on conservation easements. I am a transactional associate at a mid sized law firm. The prospect of freedom from the billable hour and contributing to meaningful work are the draws. The cons are that while the salary at the non-profit would only be slightly less than what I am making now, pay increases and opportunities for advancement will be much less than where I am now. Is it wrong that I’m just not into PE/VC? It seems to be the most desirable exit for most people that I work with. The work seems like it’s not a good fit for me but it feels crazy to pass up trying to get that amount of money when there really isn’t a realistic alternative to that amount of wealth (and I do want that amount of wealth).

For those that started their own shop, what do you wish you knew at the beginning?

Started my Roth IRA in 2019 and bought some funds that aren’t doing so well. I want to trade them for an index fund that the majority of my Roth IRA is in. Will I be penalized for “selling” before a certain amount of time? I don’t plan on taking the money out until retirement, just want to reallocate.

Judge-shopping is frowned upon in most jurisdictions, if not actually prohibited in the local Bar rules or in legislation. So, how do you handle providing your client with necessary advice when you walk into court and see that Judge Hardass is presiding? A colleague of mine is currently facing a Bar discipline panel over warning off his client. What should you do in that situation?
