Unsure this belongs here but I need answers. Moved to the suburbs a few months ago and the amount of door to door sales people and county politicians canvassing the area is insane. How can I tell someone I’m not interested without having to sit thru a whole pitch? Considering a ring camera and a no soliciting sign but I can’t not open the door. Often times it’s a package for us… this last kid almost got the wrath!

I chill a few bottles of water.

When they come, I cut them off after 5 seconds. Thank them for their time, say i’m not interested, and ask if they want a bottle of water.

I used to listen through the entire pitch as well. The offer to give them water helped me lessen my guilt for cutting them off.

My dad does this. Says its not easy to walk around a neighborhood in this heat dressed up. Be polite, say no, offer them water.

I was honestly shocked when I moved to a single family house that door to door soliciting was still a practice

like

I do not feel guilty at all. 1. They chose that field so they should be used to rejections. 2. I don’t want to hear it. Also, “NO.” I have learned is easier to say than listen to the bullcrap they spill to make a sale. Save yourself time and money, you do not actuaaly have to get your alarm system doorbell, however, if you it get it, it does solve the issue of even having to speak with them because I understand the package thing. But, if you get the APP for UPS, the mail notification for the USPS of your daily mail and packages, then you should know when the packages arrive at your door. They normally, at least on my side of the world, do not knock on the door. They leave the 📦 package and go on their merry little way; you receive a notification the package has been delivered to your door or your mailbox. Simple solution. No more having to answer the door. UPS also will take a picture of it and will also send the picture with your notification on your cell phone and last, the USPS will scan the front copy of whatever they are putting in your mailbox. So you will always know what has arrived.

If you want a real answer, find out if your local ordinances require someone to have a solicitor's permit. You'd be surprised how many little towns do, but nobody thinks of it, so nobody complains. Honestly, asking if the have a permit for solicitation may impart all of the words you're trying to hold back!

like

Put a sign up that states "ringing this door bell constitues an agreement. Any sales/religion pitches come at a $50 per minute listening fee payable up front." Fedex/USPS/UPS exempt.

like

Put up a no tresspassing sign. It's different than no solicitation. Most people understand no solicitation to mean not to come if you are selling something. If you don't want someone to come at all, that's trespassing.

They also have more detailed signs now that say that and list no selling, no this, no that. Making it very clear. It might make people think you are an extremely mean person but it will get the point across very quickly. And if someone still comes you can quickly refer to the sign and ask them to leave.

like

I don't understand why other threaten people with guns. Yes having people come to your door can be annoying but usually it's their job. I mean how would you like having a gun pointed at you while you are trying to do your job?

Some are pushy but remember they can't make you do anything. And if you put up a no trespassing sign you can call the police if they are making you u comfortable.

like

I live in a privately held gated community with no soliciting signs and I have a no soliciting sign clearly visible. If they get past the gate and security, I politely let them know they have bypassed both signs, are trespassing on private property, and that I am therefore assuming they're in the neighborhood for nefarious purposes. I inform them I am armed and castle doctrine applies in my state. Haven't had an issue with repeat visits.

like

I have the same issue where I live, though it is mostly religious groups and politicians that go door to door. My policy is that I will only speak to unexpected visitors through the doorbell camera. I'm polite, but straight to the point - "thank you for stopping by, we aren't interested. Have a nice day" Disconnect. Works pretty well.

like

Stop being so nice. Say "not interested" and close the door.

like

I used to have religous solicitors all the time. When you tell them that you worship satan and invite them to a sacrifice under the bride at the next full moon…. they never come back. Keeping a straight face can be hard.

funny

It's a thing in the suburbs. I just say "no thank you, I'm not interested" and slowly shut the door (no need to slam it). Or just don't answer. If it's a friend, then they said they were coming by, or they text at the door saying "I'm here". My kiddo is a girl scout, during cookie selling season, she would rather people just say "no thank you", then she can move on to the next one. She doesn't care why you don't want them, she just wants to move to the next guy that does. So pretend they're GS and just say no thank you and shut the door. 2 seconds later they've forgotten all about you, so do the same and move on.

I usually ignore, but a few have banged on my glass door like they were serving a warrant. Yesterday, I went to door and let loose! I told him don't ever knock on a glass door and he got smart and asked where should he knock? I asked if he knew what doorbells were for. Then I pointed out the non-glass trim all around the the door. I closed with....but here, you don't have have to worry because if you step foot in my driveway again, I'm hitting the panic button on my alarm and the police will be here before you turn around (the station is literally around the corner). Door to to door anything shouldn't be legal. We live in a 24 hr society and at 3pm, it's night time for someone. Folks could even be home sick and a jarring knock or ring of the doorbell could wake them from sleep that didn't come easy. It's bad enough being harassed in stores or other public places, but this is getting out of hand! If I see that guy again, I may just bring "my little friend" to the door. 😂

like

We have a "no soliciting" sign on our front door. We normally don't answer the door but if they pound on the door, we answer it. Those sales people who violate it, we get their card & call the company and complain. They don't come back after that.

like

Tell them you’re not interested

like

We have a large no soliciting sign. It discourages 90% of them. When they ignore it, I cut them off, point at the sign and shut the door. They are either interrupting my work day or my family time so I don’t feel guilty.

like

I'd recommend getting a doorbell cam so you can check if it's a package or solicitor. If it's something you want, answer, if it's someone with a clipboard, don't. That's what we do and it's a pretty good system.

I have a black screen security door and a pure black Doberman Shepherd mix. She's friendly with people outside if I accept them (and randomly like at the dog park). Yet she's a very fierce protector of the home. She won't stop barking fiercely when I'm talking to someone from behind the security door, a great deterrent.

I love the fact that my complex has no doorbells. I do keep a camera high above my door because of package pirates. But I love that they can't bother my peace at home.

Get yourself a Ring camera and tell them No Soliciting. I always tell them I never ever hire solicitors. I had a roofing company try to tell me once how great they were and I told him that if they're so successful they wouldn't need to solicit.

Some barged into my garage mid snowmobile maintenance. The engine is running (its loud) and this maintenance has a sequence and needs to be done timely.

They actually enter my garage, pointed at the rifles hanging in garage and “yelled time for you to F*** off”

They go “can we just have a minute.” I then point to the rifles and they leave… the nerve to enter my property.

If you don't want to get a Ring camera and you're still compelled to answer the door, tell them they have 5 seconds to get to the point, then tell them no and shut the door.

Company considers the woman a riskier bet due to possibility she’ll take maternity leave — and considers the man less risky for his ineligibility to take as much leave. 🤷
