Unsure this belongs here but I need answers. Moved to the suburbs a few months ago and the amount of door to door sales people and county politicians canvassing the area is insane. How can I tell someone I’m not interested without having to sit thru a whole pitch? Considering a ring camera and a no soliciting sign but I can’t not open the door. Often times it’s a package for us… this last kid almost got the wrath!

I chill a few bottles of water.

When they come, I cut them off after 5 seconds. Thank them for their time, say i’m not interested, and ask if they want a bottle of water.

I used to listen through the entire pitch as well. The offer to give them water helped me lessen my guilt for cutting them off.

My dad does this. Says its not easy to walk around a neighborhood in this heat dressed up. Be polite, say no, offer them water.

Don’t answer the door. It’s not safe to open your door to strangers.

There’s a national “do not knock” list. Add yourself to it and then submit a complaint to the FTC. I did this after weeks of knocks on my door from AT&T solicitors trying to get me to sign up for fiber internet. The day after I submitted the complaint an exec from AT&T called and apologized. And no more knocks on my door after that.

likehelpful

I mean, if the options are having fiber and not having fiber, you should definitely choose having fiber.

like

For solicitors I use " no thank you, I'm not interested at this time, I'll take your business card and call you when I'm ready". I'd feel more guilty wasting their time with no intention of using their service. For politicians, I dismiss them politely if i know their stance on the issues I am most concerned about, ask questions of I am unsure, offer my support for those I support.

like

I answer the door with a pew pew in my hand, say “not interested” rather rudely and promptly close the door. So far, no repeat “offenders”, but that doesn’t stop new ppl. Signs don’t help bc most won’t/can’t read them.
My advice: Just cut them off mid-sentence, say “not interested” and close the door. Nothing else you can really do unfortunately.

like

“i cant not open the door.” why do you have to open the door? you mention packages but unless you have requested that your packages are signed for, theres no reason they cant leave a package at your door to be retrieved later. not answering the door seems like the easiest and most logical option.

like

I have just stopped answering the door. Works like a charm. I don’t have to be rude and they can just move along to the next door.

like

I generally tell them that I charge $10 per minute of my time. I've made $220 so far.

Even in a private gated community with a no soliciting sign, we get door to door salesmen all the time. It’s crazy. We usually just tell them we’re not looking at this time. Some neighbors have gone off. They’re not supposed to be here, it’s clearly posted, but they’re bold.

like

I feel bad for most of them, they’re young and trying to earn a buck but it’s annoying to say the least. It almost annoys me more when they ask to speak to my husband like I’m incapable of making decisions.

like

Give them the Wrath of Passion (WoP) lol

like

Have some fun with it cause there’s really no way to stop it. For me, I use the following:
1. Solar - “Sorry, my house is being forclosed on and we are moving.”
2. Anything else - “Oh, I don’t live here. Just walking the dogs, cleaning pool, watering the plants, dropping off dinner, returing something”….fill it in with whatever you want!

No money and/or not decision maker gets rid of any salesperson. Beleive me, we can smell our own!

like

Knocking on a door is quite different than snooping around someone’s property. I think we all know what to do in this case!

like

No soliciting sign for the salesmen. Unfortunately political people don’t have to follow. Doorbell camera to tell who the delivery driver is and ignore the other people.

This sign works wonders

I put up a sarcastic sign i found, saying i am satisfied with my politics, religion, and internet provider, and no solicitation allowed. I usually cut them off and say “oh i already have [thing you’re selling] and close the door. I appreciate theyre trying to make a living, but no. Get a real job.

like

Just place "No Solicitation" signs, one by side all leading to your door and another small one on your door. If they still come to your door, you can report them as it is illegal at that point. Not sure you can do anything about the political people at this point as it, the voting cycle, has begun again.
Putting these signs up has nothing to do with receiving packages of things you have ordered.

like

Hi, I just say, "Sorry, I work from home and I'm on an important call. Say thanks, and close the door.
