Comment if you or someone you know makes $200k (could be cash + equity) working 40h/week (at most 50h occasionally) in an industry (not consulting) strategy operations or other business-related role (not product management or software engineering type of techy role), at age 25 or 3 years after undergrad. I know it’s kind of rare but want to know how rare/possible it is. What is their background and company (industry, stage, size, etc.) that got them to this nice position?Boston Consulting Group

This article gets reshared so many times but it conveniently glosses over why people are working so much more: money. Sure, you can work 40 hours a week for way less pay, but very few people actually want to do that.
I increasingly do the more burned out I get
I don’t get the question. The obvious answer is because I want to be more successful, and generally the more you work the faster you will get there. Assuming you are using your time well.
Depends on how to define successful.
Because success is a continuing lifestyle. Not a one and done. Stagnation is death.

But that does not mean you work 80+ hours every week. Why do we need to compete with our coworkers all the time?

People are overworking not only for money, many white collar jobs are threatened by outsourcing and many folks are expected to work with global teams.
Insecure overachievers choose careers that have defined promotion paths. Compare them to the overconfident overachievers who become entrepreneurs, and while working just as hard are statistically unlikely to achieve success. So I don’t feel bad for the first group because while they are overworking, at least they will receive their payout whether it’s becoming partner or landing a good industry job.
