Was it a mistake to go into public accounting from college vs going into industry? As a Manager looking to jump into corporate industry accounting I am facing hurdles with potential jobs where the Company hiring is looking for a candidate that has experience working outside of public accounting and working in the private sector. I was told when I joined that you could jump from public accounting to private and accelerate your career progression but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Its an employers market right now.. you’re learning all that talk about an accounting shortage is bogus

like

The real accounting shortage is at the “staff that can walk and chew gum at the same time, but don’t mind being paid $45,000 a year” level.

If you are working for Deloitte and a manager, you likely have a desirable skillset and strong performance. If not you probably wouldn’t have gotten both hired and promoted to manager.

You should have plenty of exit opportunities, but you will have to work for them and likely wait for them. Your first jump is your most important one. Take your time and dont settle.

like

You’ll be better off starting in B4. It may just take a bit to find the right job. If you started in industry, you may not even be a manager right now.

like

You took the safer path to success. There are also times when everyone wants a candidate with PA experience. Just be patient.

I agree with others. I wouldn't say that it was a mistake at all, I think its just the safer way to do things. Definitely take your time finding something that is right for you. Best of luck to you OP.

Serious question:

As a Registered Nurse with 11 years sales experience, why am I constantly turned down for healthcare-related sales roles? Yet on the flip side, I've gotten tons of offers in industrial or engineering spaces.

I've worked PRN as a nurse while I've been in sales. All of my sales roles were engineering-based in mechanical tools or chemicals. I've sold into various industries (energy, O&G, aerospace, pharma, HI&I, water treatment, etc). Just looking to get back to my roots.

I was hired within the last year as a site supervisor. I did well my first few projects with the company. They asked if I’d be interested in transitioning into a construction manager role. I agreed. We have yearly reviews in December but no talks of raise have been discussed. Any help on approaching this to my boss?

I just don’t understand why we have the illusion of “choice” if the offer is the same and it is really bad (in our case).
Going from $61 per paycheck for 2.5k deductible 75% copay to $500+ per paycheck with 500 deductible 85% copay.

I’m an auditor who recently made the switch to advisory. When I was in audit, I could predict my schedule. I knew when I’d be busy (i.e. during busy season or interim) so I didn’t make plans during those weeks or those weekends. In advisory, my schedule has become less predictable. Twice now, I’ve been told about last minute deadlines that have forced me to work over a weekend and late into the evenings, interfering with prior plans I had made. Is this normal in advisory?
