Congrats on finding your next gig... all the best. Very happy for you.
What an incredible story. Losing job on H1B and the 60 day runway was my worst nightmare and the only option I even considered was to pack up and leave. Truly heartening to hear you overcome the odds.
What also worked: I applied to over 1000 sm/mid sized firms given the probability of them doing H1B is low. Apply at a scale, this is a pandemic and one of its biggest ever. Your efforts also need to be at par with the situation. Most importantly don’t loose hope, for anyone going through layoffs, please DM me - happy to help! Be positive in your search, you can even land multiple offers if you do not have the H1B time limit on your head. It’s all possible! Everything is possible!!!!
Hi EY 6, I did not rely heavily on LinkedIn. My answer above provides the specifics. I used LinkedIn only to source jobs not to apply. If you are able to source without LinkedIn, that should also work. Total consulting exp(5 years), also 3 years of Engineering exp prior to consulting. In the comments below I have detailed the application process. Please DM if you are still looking for something specific. Please don’t feel discouraged, there is light at the end of the tunnel!
Congrats OP. So happy for you. Can you share some example of companies that you applied to? I just find it hard to find out companies that sponsor H1B besides the FAANG and other consigning firms :/
Yes, I was not selective about the applications. I created the resume, cover letter etc for the top 3 types of roles I was targeting - Product Manager, Tech Consultant and Strategy and Ops and applied to those roles (not companies). That is why had to go by the apply at scale, the ones who sponsored came back with recruiter rounds. It’s just that if you apply to 1000 at-least 10 will be sponsoring (and def one will come back with an offer in the given time frame) You don’t have to do the job of finding the employers that sponsor, you mention in the applications that you need sponsorship and let them come back if they sponsor. Hope that helps!
What a story, thank you for sharing, much needed! Congratulations OP..
Happy for you OP🎉👏🏽
Congrats!!
So refreshing, positive vibes..thanks OP for sharing...
What a success story! I know many people are having a hard time to land in this environment. I think EY trains you well with the hardworking atitude and soft consulting skills. You may also have a set of technical skilks that are in demand in this maket. Wish you well and success in your new role.
^^ OP - EY5 is the HR or leadership. The word “train” gave you away. Nice job OP. Good luck on your new role.
Just to ask a clarifying question, out of 1,000 jobs you applied to, you said you got some referrals and only heard back from those referrals? The two offers that you got, were they from your referrals or from the cold applications?
Can you send it to me too? Would love to understand how did you train yourself.
This is awesome! This gives me hope since I was laid off 6 weeks ago.
Sorry to hear. EY layoffs were brutal as they were such a surprise. Happy to help in whichever way I can. DM me.
Thanks for sharing! Congratulations!!! Better things to come for sure
Congrats!! Wish you the best in your future endeavors!
Talk about a can do mentality! Great stuff OP. Seems like we lost a good one. Best of luck!
Thank you Director 2! You made my day with that comment 😀
How did you even find the list of 1000 firms to apply to?
Sourced them from Indeed, LinkedIn, SmrtRecruiters, Dice, ZipRecruiter and applied directly on the company sites. This honestly, was the easiest part of the whole process. I also took help from friends and family, make the process easy and repeatable for the them (Consulting skills :)) - had all job links in one excel and all info in a doc and they helped me apply to some extent. Just the first week applied to 600 of them.
So you didn’t necessarily wait for people to refer you but applied directly on the company websites? Interesting
I also got some referrals on the side, honestly heard back only from one on the referrals end, I guess it’s mainly cuz of the market situation. Not everyone is hiring doesn’t matter what route you go. The ones that are hiring are taking even online applications.
Enthusiast
Congrats!
