It’s not subtle at all. When we had a fixed number of days allocated you would have to be paid for unused days when you leave the firm. Now with unlimited, they have no value. So the savings real.
IIRC, unused PTO days across employees are also a short-term liability on the balance sheet, so there’s that aspect of balance sheet / creditworthiness gamesmanship, too
Might be limited to those locales where you must pay accumulated PTO on termination. Can’t remember, it’s been a while
100%, it’s by design to benefit the employer. It also negates the company’s requirement to pay out unused accrued PTO in case of attrition or layoff.
Similar for unlimited sick leave. Studies showed that people who had 7 days of sick leave annually took all 7 days (even when not sick) as it was a perceived benefit they wanted to fully cash in on. When they went to unlimited, people on average took 2-3 days only (this study was pre-covid so that number has probably gone up).
Unlimited PTO is basically a scam. They want you to feel too guilty to take time off. I much prefer having a set number of days every year so I don't have to feel weird about taking a break when I need it.
