What do you think: do you keep an eye out for other opportunities even if you're happy where you're at, or only look when you need to? 👀

I’m always looking. The last place I was in, it served me beautifully.

Things at that place had been kind of rocky. Frankly, the guy that ran the firm was just awful to work for. Insanely high turnover. Unbeknownst to him, I was in very late talks with two companies to move in-house. I wasn’t sure if I was actually going to take either opportunity, since I had been with the firm less than a year at that point. Then, one Friday morning, I had a call with my boss to go over a client matter. The way he behaved was wildly unprofessional, and I have very little tolerance for that (and was also likely emboldened by knowing I could quit at any time). So we get into it and he starts getting a bit heated. He is cursing and decided to threaten me with “I don’t know if this is a good long term fit.” When I am sad, I often think of the look on his face when I called his bluff and just said, “I agree. We do not work well together. I will close some loops today with other offers I have and move on from the firm. I can provide a 2-week off ramp if that’d be helpful, otherwise today can be my last day.” He was shocked already had other opportunities lined up and then tried to backpedal and say maybe some things could change and he might’ve overreacted, and that we should wait to talk about it on Monday. We got off the call, I accepted the offer I liked, and then sent my 2-week notice email by the end of the day. My new job is an absolute dream.

Always. Be. Looking.

I always keep an eye out and almost always respond to recruiters to see if something better is out there, but am also perfectly honest when we speak that I'm not looking to move unless it is the right opportunity because I'm fine where I'm at.

I don't look but if I hear of an opportunity I may look into. I'm not currently actively searching but if a great opportunity were to cross by I would research it. That's how I got my current job.

Better to do it, before you need it. Of course the problem then becomes, is the grass really greener? The worst thing is to suddenly be out of work and need a job in a tight job market, unless you have a large nest egg / emergency fund.

I ALWAYS looked for the next challenge or chance to learn more about what interests me in my field

I worked in a hospital before education. The change was eye opening, the challenges are real, and the work is very stressful. Much more stressful and challenging than the hospital, by far.

Always looking. At this point though, it’s for post-retirement gigs.

Doesn’t hurt to look to know what’s out there. Payscale info can be helpful when it comes to review time. Also, making those contacts is beneficial. Ya never know when you might need them.

i would say its very individual and one of those ideal things: Graduate med school at 25, married at 28, children by 30, marry a perfect spouse, buy a house by 32, get your kids in to Yale but real life is a struggle.

Considering switching careers:

I got hired straight out from college 5 years ago from a small CPA firm and have worked in Tax ever since. Lately, I feel like this is not what I'm actually into. What else I can do with my Accounting degree?

My passion is Real Estate and Interior Design, love Managerial Accounting, I can sit for hours analyzing data, I also have a degree in Supply Chain Management.

My passion cannot feed my family but I've been burned out so much after years in Tax. 😞

I was recently promoted, and now part of my team report to me. I'm now able to see their pay rates and I am honestly so disappointed in the company. Especially since we just gave annual raises in Feb, plus we can all see where the money is going and it's not to the employees. Makes me sick

Thoughts on “special” salary grades. I just found out the VP I was offered is not a grade 12 like most comparable roles (verified). Also not an 11, but an 11A. Slightly higher than an 11, a good bit lower than a 12. All due to the fact that it’s a leap from my current position. Why should that matter…..shouldn’t it pay what it should pay if I am selected, rather that curving down towards my current rate?

I made a couple errors at a new job. An important document to be distributed had wrong information on it, which was proofread by 2 other people. Then a couple of typos in emails, the person micromanaging me told me to send out but I didn’t fix the errors. Failed to meet a deadline but completed 95%. I was written up over all this last week, fired this week. There’s a lot more to this but I think it’s because the DM doesn’t like me.
