You accepted the terms of the bonus when you accepted the cash. The condition was you’d have to repay if you left the firm within a period of time. It’s your obligation and responsibility to repay it.
Alumni? You’re not an alumni if you didn’t even meet the base hiring criteria. Change out the word “alumni” with “pathetic, integrity lacking dick” and the accuracy of this thread will go way up.
It’s called stealing no matter how you slice it. Don’t be a dick.
And if your last paycheck isn’t enough, yes they will send it to collections. It is a zero effort transaction for them to factor the receivable. And yes, the collection company will eventually exhaust all options to get their money since it’s literally their business.
Yes OP, the firm is the bad guy in this scenario... multi billion dollar firm or not it doesn’t make what you’re suggesting ethical.
Food on the table + greedy. Lol.
This is why we can’t have nice things 🙄
This is a live example of how fraud can occur when there are pressure (I need to put food on the table) and rationalization (multi billion dollar firm is the bad one here and shouldn’t come after little guys). OP is testing the water for opportunity right now. Don’t do it OP.
Sheesh way to go from won’t be able to eat to fraud in two comments. You accepted the bonus with the conditions clearly identified. You decided to leave. You are responsible. Time to pull up the big boy pants OP and grow up
Don’t get greedy or try to play karma. Not worth it
Instead of figuring out how to get away with it, work out a plan to pay it back. I guarantee the firm would accept a pay-back plan. And that’s the problem everyone has ..... your initial reaction is to try and ‘get away’ with something instead of figuring out a solution. You have a family, a home, and a well paying job. Take out a loan, use a CC, pay in installments, borrow from your new firm, ask the folks, borrow from your 401k, work a second job for 6 months. Or don’t. But please, don’t pass judgement on any of the posters. You opened this thread and your getting the same response across the board. Just not what you want to hear. You know what the right thing is, otherwise you wouldn’t need to ask. Do it.
They will take it out of your last paycheck/PTO balance
You won’t owe the tax you nubby ass accountant. It takes 8 seconds to Google the fact that you can claim a credit in the year in which you pay back the bonus for any withheld taxes.
EY 3 do you not get the point of a discussion?
OP, you’re a dick. Yeah, they’ll take you to collections and ruin your credit. If your new company figures out what you’ve done (small industry, friend. People gossip), they’ll know you’re an asshat. Just be ethical, if for no other reason to protect your reputation
I’ve gotten new employer to cover it, but I’m greedy and want to pocket the cash and also don’t want to deal with the tax consequences of paying back compensation out of tax period
Character and integrity can be defined by the choices one makes when no one is watching. Ultimately, all you ever have is your word and your reputation. Mine doesn’t have a price. Yours?
balance owed is more than final payout....The multi billion dollar firm is going to come after the little guy that’s just trying to put food on the table and keep a roof over the family’s head? Excellent alumni relations......
Or ask new employer to cover it
If OP wants to pocket the cash paid by the new firm to reimburse the old firm because they don’t want to stay until the agreed upon length of time ... Lord. It’s a morality question.
It gets discounted on your payout.
