It’s still yours so you get what you put in plus anything that’s vested. You should be able to roll it over into your new agencies 401K. Your HR rep should be able to help and should have a form to transfer it over. The important thing is to make sure it transfers direct to the new 401K. Don’t get a check to yourself because then you may have to pay taxes if it’s not done right. It’s pretty standard. You can leave it in your old 401K for awhile if you need to. If your new agency doesn’t have a 401k there are private funds like IRAs that can also accept a rollover.
If your agency is under a big holding company and there is chance you want to work for another company in their portfolio in the next 10 years, let it ride.
If it’s been less than a year, they’ll probably take away any matching. It’s just a pain in the ass but you have to deal with it ASAP or yes, they’ll cut you a check and you’ll pay like 1/2 of it in taxes.
Unless your new agency has access to really good funds with low management fees, it’s smarter to roll your old 401k money into an IRA with Vanguard. Most of our agency matched 401k funds aren’t as good as what you can find in your own with an IRA. My advice is use the 401k for the match only but once you exceed the amount they’ll match put additional savings in an IRA of your choosing. Also do Roth 401k and Roth IRA — pay the tax now instead of when you retire.
And in terms of rolling it over, make sure to call the firm managing your new IRA to find out how they need the funds transferred. I have done this a few times and Vanguard has wanted me to get a check from my old 401k and mail it to them certified. I haven’t had to pay any additional tax for this. Maybe CW above doesn’t do Roth?
I got a guy that helps with that! Financial advisor. Used to be an agency guy. (LMK)
