I had a recent offer for a state government position in a talent acquisition role but I’d be taking a $25K pay cut. I'm American, but my family is mostly Colombian. I was told my aunt and cousins would come here for 2 weeks. After working 5+ years and letting life happen, I ended up back with a staff title (no career/group change). Everyone said I was doing well throughout my career. But most of peers are now managers, senior managers, directors, controllers, etc. I really don’t want to compare, but how do I deal with this so it doesn’t bother me? I need some advice. I have some co workers that are really disgruntled and complain about their jobs a lot to me. Feel like I’m stuck. I’m a senior manager (CPA) in international tax but considering a do-over to be more desirable to the industry. If you had to start over (with industry as your end goal) what focus area would you choose?

Do you all see a compelling future in your tax career? I’ll go first, I don’t see a compelling future working for a large PA firm in the long run because you have to work more as you move up. However, I do see a compelling future by using my knowledge and skills to open my own firm/business and work less hours as long as I make enough money which is $75k, or if I do work long hours, it’s because I want to.

Question for senior tax managers, tax directors, and higher in public accounting. Have you seen managers or senior managers in PA hired in tax who you feel know very little for the position, or does this happen only very rarely or never in your opinion?
