How long were you an SAE before promoting to AS?

Higher education doesn’t matter. Years of experience does
I most often find if I'm hiring an SAE instead of AE, I need to reset my expectations. It's more likely that I'll hire an AE to be promotable to SAE. It's incredibly difficult to accurately interview for that nuanced soft skill difference without discovering I was looking for an AS all along.
Usually around 3-5 years experience and responsibility for managing the full day-to-day execution on 1-3 accounts as a direct client contact. Beginning to demonstrate the ability to plan, strategize or build out scopes. Honestly much of the difference between AE/SAE is in soft skills - how you approach more challenging situations, being trusted to deliver to clients with little oversight.
Figured as much in the advertising industry. So then what’s the experience level a hiring manager would want to see for an SAE v. AE? Not only in years experience but also in responsibilities?
