Depends on many factors such as age , time / tenure with company , time to be taken to find same type of job in this environment ! Usually it’s 1 week per year but usually company pays more than that to save them from lawsuits etc !
I got 3 months pay as severance package which was over $36k but taxes about 45%. I resigned from one of the big 5s to join this B2B SaaS company as they offered a really good pay. But few months down the line they decided to downsize as they couldn’t afford it anymore. The entire Canada team was let go eventually. I’m still out here looking for new opportunities. Please reach out if you’ve got something.
I hope you find something soon. I haven't received any callbacks yet.
You can check your job offer letter which should state the amount of severance you would be getting. I have had one month per year. Here is the baseline in Canada: https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/corporate/portfolio/labour/programs/labour-standards/reports/termination-rights.html#:~:text=An%20employee%20who%20has%20completed,minimum%20of%20five%20days'%20pay.
I am not too familiar whether it is hard or not as it is relative. But I believe the employer needs hard evidence to do so otherwise there could be serious repercussions if the employee decides to sue.

‘Lack of work’ means you were terminated without cause. There are many criteria that determine severance (not just the ones you see in severance calculators). You haven’t given enough information to determine even a sensible guess. Like how many years service? What was your role? Will it be easy for you to find new work? What does your employment contract say? Your age you have given is only one criteria. I’ve seen a 38 year old get 19 months severance - and a 67 year old get less at 18 months at the same company within a year. You can read it yourself (all public knowledge) search 2018 Frith v IBM Canada or 2017 Patterson v IBM Canada. Don’t think that just because someone is about 30 years older than someone else they automatically get more - you need the other criteria to get a complete story.
I did review my contract and it says nothing explictly- only something like, severance will be paid in accordance to provincial laws.
I was with this org for close to 2 years, was working as a Project Manager. Although it might not be super hard to find another offer in general, but it might be very competitive, esp in the current job market.

Search Sunira Chaudhri (columnist at Toronto Sun) - she has a few articles on shorter service employees that might be of interest to you. Not to spoil her column but essentially she says that shorter service employees are raking it in.
