Tighten your book and jump ship onto a new agency. Ask for $85k, mid-level
3 years as a junior is definitely enough to be promoted. I would try looking at the real agency salaries website but honestly agencies should be trying to promote juniors around the 2nd year so I would also look outside your agency for opportunities. Some agencies just aren’t good about promoting
Time does not equal promotion. Your work does. If the work isn’t there, or you’re hard to work with there is no guarantee. Yes, experience does factor in - but a promotion is earned, not given due to a timeline.
Hold on, are you saying 62K would be almost a 50% jump from what you make now?
I made 45k, 8 years ago as a junior in Austin. You are underpaid and the agency is taking advantage of you.
Chief
Yeah at 3 yrs experience youre in the 75k to 85k range. I would aim on the high end of that.
Listen to your own diligent research:
You are underpaid by 50%.
This may not translate to your current agency making up the difference in your next review but you can at least flag that you know what you’re worth and gauge how much they care if/when they cough up some extra cash for you.
Don’t be afraid to ask for that $62k salary out in the larger market. Ask for more and let them whittle it down. You might surprise yourself and get what you asked for.
i have been copywriting for less than a year and i make $68k. i also live in a cheaper city than boston. seconding everyone who said you’re in the $75k to $85k range. go get your bag dude!!
$62000 sounds totally realistic. I’d ask for that and cite the calculators.

Research your companies job description for the role you want to be promoted to. Research it at other companies. Be honest with yourself. Can you effortlessly check off all of the requirements and show proof of it? If so aim high but be prepared to search elsewhere.
If you do not feel you are being compensated, it is time to ask for more and if not provided look elsewhere.
At 3 years you should be making at least 70k in most major markets. If your agency won’t pay you that, and it sounds like they won’t, then start looking elsewhere. And remember, you don’t need to disclose your current salary to any other agency—just give them a range you’re willing to accept and know you’ll get the bottom end of it.
Just wanted to clarify. When I said 50% jump, that’s 50% of my current salary. So I’m at about 40k, not 30k. Sorry if there was confusion!
Idk if this changes much though.
Yup. Still clear.
Multiply 1 x(percent increase) using your current salary to get a raw number for interviews. Want a 50% raise? Multiply by 1.5 and so on.
Doing the reverse — 62k/1.5 — gives your current salary.
Which calculators did you use? Currently researching my value and would appreciate the resources!

Promoted? Naw, it's time to promote yourself with a new job. It's one of the main reasons people jump around so much in this industry - for better salaries and/or titles.
Find a friend in Commercial Finance that has access to the market rates 😉
