I haven’t worked at OW but work with some senior folk who have transferred over recently. I think that BCG has more respect for personal time, balancing workload and sustainability. I find the OW folk to be deep experts but not look after the team / willing to sacrifice a lot for the client.
Same as OW2. I’ve honestly always heard that BCG had a lot more backstabbing than us and less of a “people’s” culture
Lived with someone who worked at OW. Some differences I noticed:
- people at OW care less about WLB and seems to work harder
- less production / outsourcing resources at OW, that is, you can't shoot off menial tasks like formatting slides
- OW has a lot more risk related work in New York office
- OW is not as strict about up or out so there's some leniency in how long you can stay as EM, P, etc.
I would agree with all these points as well. Again, that is a US view and especially rellevant for NYC.
Thanks for the replies everyone! I think I’m going to apply to BCG :)
OW7 Come with meeeeee
Interesting, I got recently an opposite view from OW new joiner in Dubai, that the level of internal support is much higher than in BCG. He was so happy to see how much support he can get.
I spoke with a partner who joined us from BCG. Heard that the up-or-out pressure definitely impacted the culture — negatively from the POV of the partner, but obviously that’s up to personal preference. One difference cited was that at OW people are more collegial vs. at BCG people are always having to think about how the work relationships will impact their high-importance career checkpoints/reviews.
@BCG fish, Given the up-or-out nature of BCG performance management, is it right to assume that to the extent WLB really is better at BCG, that it’s basically just put onto the EM/PL to solve? And if they don’t, they’re out? It seems like if management wanted to flip a switch and improve WLB, that would be the way to do it. And then that habit/norm, enforced by further up-or-out, works its way up the food chain.
I have heard from a good friend of mine that BCG people will speak wonders about the firm to outsiders, but the internal BCG bowl is full of horrible experiences and complaints.
Pro
Not strictly true OW9. It depends by project and partner team. I know of teams that get meals (not mine 😢).
But yes, we don’t have a blanket firm policy. Lots of noise around that in our bowl as well.
Why don't you talk to the folks who joined us from bcg?
