Never let a win get to your head. Never let a loss get to your heart.
It’s a smaller community than you think. You will develop a reputation so act accordingly.
Defense side here - yes, even a car accident with the slightest bit of damage can cause injury.

Quit being so disappointed when the defense doesn’t get to your number and just try the case. They’re just doing their job so do yours.

And to be clear I’m a plaintiffs attorney myself, and I properly manage my expectations and don’t expect you to just give me policy limits because I asked.
Not popping off at clients with no legal training who tell me that I don't know what I am talking about.
Manage my own expectations re not falling in love with the case and client control/managing their expectations. Honestly the trial work was the easiest thing to understand. However, with the internet and every incorrect or misleading resource available to clients at a moments notice I am finding it harder and harder to manage their expectations. When the news only reports the rare huge verdict and not the thousands of defense verdicts it took to get that one newsworthy verdict, it's hard for them to understand.
Not every case is a slam dunk case. Disappointing results at trial are much more frequent and common than I previously thought.
Hardest thing for the clients to understand too
Don’t give in to a client with an inch here and an inch there.
It’s happened multiple times in slightly different ways (didn’t break any ethical rules). One client was a complete nut case. Traveling nurse, has no insurance-but wasn’t at fault (CA) there wasn’t much in it for me-but she seemed to be in over head and really struggling. Also, completely out of touch with reality.
She asked to use my phone (she didn’t know I was a fresh atty and I did t tell her) after she asked who was a witness. Then she asked if she could hand it off it to dude A—who appeared to have been in the accident but not sure and if he was ——-didn’t know which car. I said “yes of course” lol
She hadn’t taken my name down but she had my phone number since she called her sister. Kind of weird tbh. I had even asked some of my tow buddies dudes to take her car half a mile down to be nice.
She calls the next day- and asks if I would take her case. Uhh wut!? Se google my name and figured I was a salty CA BAR vet—all 3 months. I assumed it was probably not soliciting as it wasn’t my intention but to the reasonable or average person it could very well come off as soliciting. I figured there were enough factors for it to be soliciting or enough factors to give off the impression.
Sob story and this and that began. Plus there wasn’t much money in it—yea it’s ok to say that—especially after you’ve done enough to more than inconvenience yourself. “OK” I said. In the end she gets mad because the 3rd party carrier takes too long to admit liability and the body shop SHE chose
Takes too long to fix her car. I’m working for free and she calls the bar. Worst part is my boss gets an earful as well.
She explained it in te following manner” he harassed me until I said yes and then he ordered me to give the phone to the driver of the other vehicle and he yelled at him telling him to call his insurance. My boss comes in and says “you’re soliciting and you talk to the other driver and you tell him to call HIS insurance”. I felt so dumb.
