What’s your firm’s policy on being able to expense meals (e.g., after a certain time of day or after a certain number of billable hours)?

Past 7. Reality is if you’re billing 9+ hours firm should cover dinner.

like

Used to be 9.5 billable hours but they took it away during pandemic and don’t seem to want to bring it back despite soft-RTO

like

We covered Uber eats for a while - no clue if that’s still in play.

Can expense weekday dinner if staying in the office past 8pm (can order in advance), weekend meals in the office also covered but forgot the hours requirement and I would rather work from home on weekends if I had to.

like

10 hours of time logged - whether billable or not

like

V50 and don’t get this perk :(

like

Believe it’s past 9pm or anytime on weekends, in office only. I admittedly have only used it a couple times at this firm because it isn’t worth a takeout burger to me to work from the office instead of my house at 9pm.

like

10 hours logged in office.

We used to be able to expense meals after 9 billable hours but seems like firm effectively took it away by requiring the pre-approval of the person in charge of the matter’s bill. Coincides with hard turn to RTO.

Received a job offer. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a concern I had about it. It's an entry level position, and I don't have much experience. The billables are 2040 a year. For billable hours in civil litigation and insurance defense, is 2040 hours for a 1st year associate on the high end in this field for a small or midsize firm? It seems like most attorneys I know have minimum requirements of around 1800. The compensation is around 80k a year.

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!

How many matters is typical for one associate to handle (BL lit)? I know it is group-specific, but just trying to get a general idea. I’m a 2nd year and I am the only associate staffed on about 30 cases-meaning I keep track of all deadlines, do all day to day assignments, keep on top of following up with client/OC, and all research/drafting. Partners handle deps/court but that is about it. Is this a normal case load to be responsible for as a jr? I being dramatic by thinking this is too much?
