New NY Trump tax on transient workers.
The NY state line item is correct with full wages. When you file taxes you input the number of days worked there (it might be a percent of total hours worked. Haven't filed mine yet his year, so don't recall exactly. But should be when you download the NY state forms in turbotax when you are filing that it will ask how much time worked out of state (e.g. Out of your home state). He W-2 received from Accenture should include forms for federal, your home state, any other state you worked in during the year.
The box is correct. Even if you worked 1 hour in NY they report all of your wages (really really fucking dumb). You have to fill out an additional form on turbo to allocate days. It gets fucking confusing so I hired a tax professional. Best $250 I ever spent
Your NY W2 includes all income earned for the entire year. You need to report the number of days worked in NY as part of the tax prep. As EY2 stated, the electronic filing software, like TurboTax will recalculate the tax owed based on your time worked there. EY1, you should still file NY State or contact a tax professional regarding the filing. My understanding is that any time reported as worked in NY (regardless of billable or not - the state doesn't care) indicates that you have earned a portion of your salary in the state and therefore owe NY state tax on it.
User error
@ey3, was supposed to be AWT and ended up working. And I was interviewing MBA candidates... probably should have clarified that part.
So what did you do OP? I got a NY filing copy as well and am ignoring it. Only went to NYC on recruiting trips, so no idea why I need to file in the state.
Turbo tax let's you determine what proportion of your income was earned in NY. Once you input that - everything else corrects itself
I messed it up last year and paid the 6k 🤦🏼♀️my attorney said it didn't matter that much because my home state has comparable tax rates
Right, I have earned <$1000 in NY but the line item on my W2 holds my full income in Box 16 (STATE wages, tips, etc). Is that in error? I would expect this box to contain the $ I have earned strictly in NY.
Also to clarify, I only received a W-2 (didn't receive a NY W-2, but there is a line item on my W-2 mentioning NY)
How do you input number of days worked in a state into TurboTax? I'm getting royally screwed
*a single W-2
Seems like a PITA to report that I worked 4 days out of the year while sleeping in NYC despite it just being interviews / alternative weekend travel.
Don't code your time to NYC then. Fly into EWR and stay at the W in Hoboken NJ
Why did you book time for AWT? Also, were you interviewing with a different company or just joining EY?
Does TX have a reciprocal agreement with NY? Thats what you need to check
