Which certification we would you recommend for career advancement to be an HR manager? PHR or SHRM? Any other certification I should consider? Pros and cons would be greatly appreciated!

In my experience, I haven’t seen certifications help in career advancement. They definitely help in developing skills; however, career advancement requires more than just skills like experience/ opportunity, performance/ impact…

I agree with the above poster. experience will go further

I see PHR a lot more. Of course experience is best but if you lack experience or are transitioning from another career, certification can show commitment and understanding of the field.

If I have to choose one, I'd choose SHRM since it is more knowledge-based. But I agree with the other comments that experience is much better than any certifications. It can only help you in some aspects but the rest would depend on your experience.

Currently a first year staff in Risk Advisory in a Mid-Tier Firm hoping to move to Big 4 for either Risk or Cyber. When would be the most appropriate time to make the change? I heard that Senior Staff in mid-tier would most likely be hired as an “Experienced Hire” in Big 4. So would it be smarter to make the move now as a first year staff since I’ll be considered Experienced Hire anyway?

I’ve been in hot pursuit of a role in PM, assistant, junior, coordinator, producer. If it smells like PM I’ve been after it. I feel as though I’m consistently pushed towards a sales-ish role by recruiters “to gain experience” in a company so that I can move into a PM role for them. Is this a flat out lie? Are there any PMs here that had to embrace the suck of a cold call role before they could have the goal job? 😟

I had my PHR back in early 2000, then made a career change to a paramedic (I know, right). I called SHRM and they said I'm eligible to test again even though I only currently have 1.5 yrs of HR.

I purchased the online study guide and it seems that HR has gone in a completely different direction - more operations related than employee relations etc.

Did anyone find this online training to be helpful? I test in July, so any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks - lauren
