Who out there have challenges at home, above and beyond the typical difficulties, which make balancing home, personal and work time extra difficult? I'm talking about children with disabilities, family members experiencing health issues, your own health problems... How do you deal with it? How do you manage coming into work with enough energy and not sacrificing your own health?

BTW, not taking anything away from all of you out there raising families and working. I know it's hard.

May I share I lived that life myself, including living under a death threat by my ex and 6 weeks later him murdering our disabled son so he didn’t have to worry about dealing with him the rest of our son’s life and interfering with his other wife’s demands to not allow our son to be with them ever again! To live with constant stalking for the past 10 years, including this morning! I totally am on your very page! My salvation was in trusting God with my whole heart and soul, arming me with His blood to keep me safe to continue doing His work!
I hope you have a close family member who can give you time off you home job 24/7/365. If you don’t, reach out to your schools social worker for resources to bring you some peace!!! You are now in my prayers! If you can give 100% of this to God, I promise you God will bring you through it! I am a testimony of that promise!

Wow! That's is a heartbreaking story, and a powerful testimony.
I am a person of Christian faith. Much of this year it has been difficult to get to church at all because we're either dealing with his behaviors or so drained that we just can't even leave the house. I have relied on God though this and He has supplied for our needs.
Last winter my son could think of nothing but moving out of the house and in with his criminal "friend". We didn't have guardianship yet so we couldn't stop him. He went off all his medications including diabetic meds. Engaged in illegal behavior. Was taken advantage of and stolen from. Lived homeless on the street much of the time.
Eventually some harsh legal consequences were forced upon him (minus specifics). This was a huge relief as he now had some legal accountability.
It's been rocky since but overall he's made slow and steady improvement. He is working at doing better and now sees how dangerous it is to do what he was doing.
The work, behaviors, support that I have to give him if I want to see him succeed, cost of legal fees that we're still dealing with, medications, ect. it just seems endless and seems to consume our lives.
I thank you for your prayers and you will be in mine as well. If you would pray for positive Christian friends and for him to find some healthy interests and activities it would be very helpful.

I had a health scare last year and it was really difficult. You have your normal day to day, which can be hard, throw in something big and it was a level of difficulty I never even knew existed. It was hard to focus at work, and I felt guilty, and then it was hard at home with a lot more doctor visits and running around.

Chronic health issues since age 13. Not fun!
If I’m in a boot let’s say due to foot surgery, like I’ve been 3x within the past 2 years, yes of course I tell my students. If I’m off due to a flare or hospitalizations, no I do not share that.

How about methods to deal with these challenges and keep yourself as healthy as possible?

I'm trying to come to terms with the reality that my adult son's disabilities impact him enough that I will be caring for him and remain his legal adult guardian for many years to come if not indefinitely. The last year has been traumatizing with everything that he's done, and everything that's been done to him.
Not looking for advice on how to get him to move on. Trust me we're doing everything we can. We SpEd teachers are the most informed group of people out there when it comes to providing services and caring for people with disabilities.

In the last year I've gone from having a very normal and consistent blood pressure to being high. I physically feel like crap most of the time and I'm sure it's stress related. I've spent thousands on legal fees and supports for him.

It's great to tell someone to take a break, but what if that's not an option?

I feel like I'm at my wits end. I teach self-contained classes and according to the ISBE website my classes shouldn't be more than 8 students unless I have an aide - then it can be 10. I have no aide and most of my classes are around 14 kids. Some with behavior plans that are only out of our behavior room setting for my class... Is anybody else out there going through illegal class sizes for self-contained? How are you dealing? Maybe a vent session is in order.

It is 23 days into the school year and the team members all make different plans and as a result, nothing is being accomplished. And if paraprofessionals follow ie what OT says but not PT, it cause so much unnecessary conflict!
