How do you all deal with the guilt of leaving a comany/ team? I have been working at Microsoft for 1 year now, and seriously considering moving. I find the code base to be very legacy and I mostly work on obscure bugs that I spend so much time on, mostly due to navigating this large code base and not having much docs to refer to. Hence I find the job slightly unsatisfying, and that I could learn more elsewhere. However, I love the wlb, the team and company culture. The guilt stops my applying.

Big 4. Reason I ask is Deloitte wants to bring me in as a senior consultant and I'm only a senior one here at EY. So I'm actually skipping a year and getting "promoted" there
Yeah definitely don't volunteer your current salary. If you're forced to give a number, give a desired range worded as a "people in comparable firms would make X-Y" and put the lower end of the range around what you'd actually accept since they'll always try to go low
Deloitte, NYC, bringing me in as a senior consultant with no grad degree, but skip promoted at EY
Big 4? They don't need to they have a pretty good idea where you re at
Keep in mind that while they can't ask anything else, any future employer can contact EY and verify your dates of employment and title/salary at departure
Hold off on sharing, they don't need the info. They run a calculation to figure out you % raise and the lowball exp hires.
D1 so do you think that the first offer will always be very lowball or just ballpark?
It won't be low it will be low for the market but more than you make. I have always been told you get a 20-30% bump when you jump companies. So think of what you would make if you stuck around.
So it's kind of odd because of the years difference between EY and Deloitte consulting. Since a new senior consultant makes a lot less at EY than a new senior consultant at Deloitte, so how would you gauge what a good offer is from Deloitte?
You would have to know your market, I would ask them what they think a fair offer for a sc is vs giving them a number to start with
They will ask. I was honest and asked and received a 20% bump at the same level. Know what other big4 are offering. Where are you applying? Firm, City, Rank, grad degree?
OP, PwC is on a fixed transparent model. As a first year Senior, NYC, no-grad degree, you would get $99K. Our HR did a lot of research to fix these #s, so, other big4 should be comparable.
Don't forget to ask for a signing bonus (my EY partner told me that after I signed with P-dub), $5-10K is industry standards, and it should cover at least any bonuses you are missing any healthcare deductibles you met.
Any idea what it would be for DC? I'm considering switching there also.
And it's common to ask for a signing bonus?
I'm not sure about DC. The FB I checked, someone reported $82K, but people in CHI get $95K, so I think the DC person is possibly in government practice. I would say $95K.
They will ask for your salary, if you give them a number don't lie about it, they will find out and it will be curtains for your offer. Give them a ball park of what you'd like to get and do some market research. Always negotiate they will lowball you as an exp hire.
