I’m starting to make this same realization. The prestige of these consulting/accounting companies does not outweigh the amount of hours you need to work. I’m realizing that I would much rather worth at an unexciting company in an unexciting position that gives me a work life balance. My job is not my life.
Well I can tell you that I don’t think it gets better, and while my 20+ years in public accounting have afforded me a great many things the cost has been significant. The past 7 months has really shown me just how ridiculous the expectations on us have become. You need to be available 24/7, you need to do whatever it takes to get the job done, yes we promised the client the impossible but you will figure it out attitude and the talking out of both sides of your mouth (oh you haven’t been able to take a day off in months? You should be taking your time off! By the way are you finished with that piece of crap client I dropped on you with no guidance and a pathetic budget?) - are just a few of my favorites.
When I talk to my friends who are not in accounting, they absolutely think I am nuts for doing what I do. My kids worry about my lack of sleep and have been watching me take phone calls on Sundays, super early/late, and on family vacations their whole lives - they wonder why it has to be like that all the time. I tell them all the time to do something that makes them happy and I hope they never choose a job where they are stuck behind a desk.....
Obviously I stayed too long to do anything about it now, and the salary and flexibility has been great for raising my kids, but the cost to my health both physically and mentally has been extraordinary.
I was hoping this wfh situation would help make this part of our job better, but I think it has made it worse..... Sorry for the rant, just being honest.
I had a friend who has a similar thing as you. She has stayed to long but what she did is amazing. She consulted and her clients hired her as consultant. She still has flexibility and she did the things she is good at but not bound by the working hour requirement. She has been happy eversince. I was in public for 12 years enjoyed until politics got into me. There are more things outside of work. Life is short make sure to enjoy it.
Life's too short
Fwa is the way!
Ey2: I agree with needing to be comfortable setting hard boundaries. I think I specified this only works if you have a great team, delegate effectively, and stick to your boundaries. And I'm of the firm opinion that if someone has an fwa and does all of the above but doesn't have their boundaries respected, they should leave. Based on what I've heard from the big 4 employees it may work better at midsize firms.
... I think for a certain type of person it gets better but for people that care about their work/team it really doesn’t.
