At Amazon, what is the difference between a Program Manager and Technical Program Manager? It looks like the Technical one gets paid about 25% more but not sure what roles/responsibilities they do differently. Amazon
Also how technical a background does someone need for a Technical Program Manager role?

1 - giving your number before they give theirs
2 - not asking for what you want (which should have some basis in reality/research). I’m guilty of sometimes second guessing my number right before I say it and have always kicked myself after when that happened.
That being said, this market seems to be changing the game a bit where people are getting what appear to be offers at the end of interview rounds only to then be ghosted or passed over when it comes to finalizing pay possibly because someone else was willing to take a smaller number. If you have to make your target for whatever reason that could be a dodged bullet but if you would’ve been willing to settle for less then there’s a risk that asking too much (even if it seems reasonable) could knock you out of the running.
I always try to make sure they make the offer first, before I say anything about what I want. I've learned the hard way that you can definitely shoot yourself in the foot if you come in too low. Let them set the tone first, then negotiate as needed.
Don't go too high. Do your research on the average amount someone in your position at that company should be paid. Ask for something around 25% higher, and they'll usually settle on something between 10-15% higher.
