They can rent a car, but since it’s for your birthday celebration, you could reimburse them the rental money. Frankly if my income was low, I’d not even travel for my own birthday, much less for a friend. It’s just too expensive for that income level.
Just pay for the rental. It is not common that friends would fly out for your birthday.
No, you wouldn’t be an asshole if you had your friend rent a car.
But your friend would be an asshole if he/she let you drive ~3 hours round trip to pick him/her up from the airport though…
and on your birthday weekend.
Thanks for that perspective. This never crossed my mind.
It’s only an additional 3 hour round trip for me, but I’m already doing all of the grocery store runs, paying for the cabin, and organizing the weekend.
If I did have her rent the car, would it make sense that I also pay for the rental for her? This friend only makes around $30k, so that’s why I feel bad asking. Their round trip flight is $200.
Thank you. That was super helpful.
Your friends are coming to celebrate you. Do you know that her paying for the rental would be a burden? If not, I’d let her handle it.
I don’t know for sure if it’s a burden. I believe her husband does fairly well.
Is there room to give them a ride back if they don't rent a car? How much would Uber/Public transit to somewhere closer be?
I looked into that & it would be the same price to Uber one way as it would be to rent a car for the weekend.
