If you love coding, work for tech.
I love coding and I do it everyday and I work in consulting and I write software for all types of clients. Every industry needs coders.
Hmm. I'm still relatively new in consulting. There is credit given for good swe skills. The client seems to flip back and forth though between what they want. Some days it's just get it done. Other days code quality is important.
I think the big difference is variety of projects vs depth at 1 project. With consulting you get different projects every year and get to explore different industries while doing greenfield development. With a tech company you're constrained to working on the same tech stack and projects that are not greenfield.
That was my assumption. That the work is mundane at big tech.
Consulting if you want more variety at the cost of worse wlb and potentially lower comp in the short/medium run. Otherwise, probably big tech.
With consulting there is also sadly a risk of being treated like a second class employee depending on the firm/office culture if you're writing code.
It isn't that bad where I am. It's a normal work week and unlimited PTO. Haven't had pto denied. Focus is on writing code and delivering. As long as that is done everyone is happy. No hard deadlines.

I am a big fish in a small pond working as a consultant for a company that doesn't know much about tech.
