250k offer in Dallas versus 600k in NYC? Does the delta make up for difference in COL?

650k. Anyone telling you to take 400k less and live in Dallas doesn’t know anything about NYC or they’re crazy. With 650k you can afford a very very nice home in Brooklyn or queens and an even nicer home in Staten Island. Or you can just move out to Westchester. That’s a quick ride on the train to grand central. Bottom line. You’ll live like kings in nyc with 650k.

This

I make $600k in ny and live in long island which has high property taxes but great public school. My wife stays at home and we have 3 kids. $600k goes a looong way.

Not sure the Delta makes up for having to live in Texas...

like

I was thinking the opposite

smart

What do u do? I must be doing something wrong in my career.

Many are tho

@ op my only question is who is offering 600k in Nyc - I will take your job if you don’t want it. I need a higher earning position at this point if it has some semblance of work life balance - am supporting 8 people on one salary of 250k before tax and becoming unmanageable

like

I feel you bro . I started supporting my parents and sister from when I was 28. Already feeding a family of 4. In the middle my grandmother (who hasn’t spoken to me or my family in ages) reached out and asked if she can get monthly allowance from me. My father said no, so thankfully 1 less.
I’m still single hopefully I find a spouse who can share the burden.

The cost of living has gone up quite a bit in Dallas - I wouldn’t equate the two. 250k is the average middle class family in Dallas now

funny

Ok, so the low income group in Dallas is 0-90%, middle class is 91-99%, rich are 100% in HHI.

That should sound as preposterous as it looks, but it's what's being suggested lol.

like

What job is paying you 600k in NY?

like

No income tax in TX, lax vax mandates, and Texas is becoming bitcoin country. This is coming from a life long Manhattanite. Plus good barbecue. DALLAS

funny

I’m sitting on a pile of Flooz. Way better than Bitcoin.

How is 250k anywhere comparable to 600k???!

likesmart

OP if you’re worried about all that I’d say try to live somewhere like Forest Hills Gardens. Beautiful houses in the $1-2MM range, easy access to public transit, and great school district. Plus Queens is better than suburbs anyway.

like

If you’re able to handle the craze of NYC right now with all the crime, then NYC. If you’re looking to breathe fresh air, have less stress, want a less intense lifestyle, get fresh foods, Dallas. Personally, I would take Dallas. NYC is terrible right now.

To everyone else’s point, you can move later after stacking cash.

funny

This is laughable. Crime in NYC isn’t appreciably higher than it’s been for years, and certainly not at a level to be noticeable in most of the city. Cable news is not your friend.

Also the food in NYC is unquestionably superior to that of Dallas. The only thing “terrible” in NYC right now is that things still aren’t back to the pre-pandemic level of life because the plague is still ongoing.

like

We like nyc more. Dallas has been a pleasant detour though and we don’t mind staying here. The pay is better in nyc but btwn private school tuition and housing not sure if we come out ahead. If it’s cost neutral I prefer nyc but if it’s not much better after expenses, I’m okay staying put in Dallas

like

Argyle is better than south lake in my opinion. Or flower mound.

like

Dallas all day. And I’m from NYC.

like

I’m like PwC3 I make $600k it’s cool but I could totally make more. If I moved to Manhattan. I wouldn’t take less than 1.5 mill as a VP social strategist.

🧢🧢🧢

I’m trying to wrap my head around the $250k and $600k numbers to be honest

like

600K and work remotely from TX 😁😁..jokes apart but good for you to get such generous offers.

funny

Thanks! Yes we feel very lucky to be in this position

How is this a serious question?

like

How about use the 600k over to move the 250k offer up, probably to ~ $350k in Dallas, this is better than or approximately the same as 600k in NYC (standard of living wise)

funny

600k in NY all day. You can live comfortably in NY on 400k and bank the 200k to retire in Dallas in a decade or two.

like

Taxes eat into a lot of that spending and saving. So I would need to live on 200k and can bank 100k or so

Find a tax accountant asap. If you’re making $600k, there’s no reason you can’t use NY’s tax code to eliminate most of your state taxes and reduce your effective federal tax rate to like 10%

like

Lol I’m assuming you’re joking. Haven’t heard of anything of the like. Closest thing was around here salt cap going up but that looks all but dead

Texas

Pros
- No state income tax

Cons (depending on where in TX)
1. The usual Red v Blue ideology differences:
- Roe v Wade at risk on daily basis
- anti-BLM, anti-immigrant sentiment in a not-insignificant % of population
- blanket dislike for progressive ideals
- One election away from GoFundMe campaigns promoting sedition
- Gun culture worship

Equals
- just as many sports teams, but TX ones are worse

I think you have your answer.

Hello all. My company just went through an acquisition and the company did some restructuring of job titles. When they did this we were all advised the company would be making sure our jobs pay aligned with the national average.
My issue with this is my job title went from a Technical Support Supervisor to a Customer Success Team Lead. I have voiced my concerns with management but have been advised job titles are semantics. In my eyes this is a demotion, and will affect how much my job is worth.
