I think honesty matters most here. I would not promise what is not there. I would focus on growth, visibility, and a clear path, otherwise you risk losing them anyway.

Agree here!

No.

Thanks.

I suppose that I would provide some “next level” development activities for them. This will benefit you while the employee is in the current role, and at the same time, benefit them if/when they decide to leave. It may just buy both of you time to see if a position at the current company opens up.

Right, prep them for the move so they’re the best candidate when and if it opens.

Just be direct in communicating the truth always

Of course, honesty goes the farthest.

I just spoke with a software architect that went back to school to learn software engineering after law school because it was more lucrative and had less hours. He’s worked his way up and has the skills and authority to work 6:30am-10am and gets to work remotely. We discussed that results/outputs is better than billable time like in law and public accounting. Yet, his parents and others would view him as “lazy” but he does his job and makes a fantastic living. Time>Money and Results>Hours

Totally disinterested in tax, have 2.5 years experience and masters in accounting. Banking and finance jobs for about 3 years before I got into accounting. I don’t like the stuff that comes along with public, such as time tracking and hours goals. A transfer to audit is low on my priority list (also tough to pull off). Just started actively looking in industry, but fear that if I continue to stay in my current position, I will get pigeonholed into tax only positions in the future. Cont...

SPHR exam- has anyone ever been “randomly selected” for an application audit? This just happened to me and the sheer amount of effort that is going to go into collecting all the documents almost makes me not want to follow through. Since I didn’t finish undergrad, they’re asking for a copy of my high school diploma or transcript and that itself is going to be an absolute nightmare to get hold of. Guess I’m not really looking for a solution here, just venting.

Recently accepted a temp role as an HR admin for a former employer. Previously interned there & left because my supervisor did not have any growth opportunities planned out for me; this was in spite of my stellar performance, as reflected in my 90 day review. She has since left the company, but there’s crazy turnover in the company & in the HR department in particular. Just that an HR coordinator resigned. Is it worth going back into a dumpster fire w/ no leadership to gain experience?
