Glad it was helpful. The most important thing is to see severe anxiety as a illness that needs treatment. Sure we must function with it but never confuse it with stress. That’s the default a HR person will go to.
Such a good link... im so glad high functioning anxiety is starting to get more attention than it has in the past, as I think so many individuals in our field (and others!) can relate. Personally, I think #3- getting in touch with your body and #5- learn to intervene with yourself are both critically important for management and success long term. The body carries so much of the physical, mental and emotional load, and the negative impact of consistently wearing it down, ignoring your intuition and true needs, and failing to care for yourself can be wildly detrimental for the long run - and take years from which to recover! So much better to identify and instill coping and self care skills early on, and ensure they remain a fundamental component of your life for the long term.

You are so right - and it’s easy to second guess yourself when one is surrounded by those messages of “it’s just stress, you should be able to handle this”. By educating ourselves, being really mindful and deliberate about our actions, and treating our mental health as TRULY another aspect of our whole body HEALTH, it can make such a difference in our long term quality of life, efficacy and burnout (or lack thereof).
It’s also important to normalize the conversation, too. When I started managing, I had (and continue to have) a lot of conversations with my direct reports surrounding boundaries, saying no (without actually saying no), and keeping yourself healthy in the face of demands that never stop. Otherwise, we all suffer through the same experiences silently. So much better to be open and learn from one another in the pursuit of better.

D1 - I once was signed off by my MD for severe anxiety, and my CFO (HR head) refused to accept it saying we all have stress. Trouble is when you’re sick you don’t have any fight in you to challenge these Neanderthals.
