A lot of small agencies like to tout a "flat" team structure as a perk but honestly it feels like it shifts a would-be executive decision onto employees in the same way that "unlimited" PTO does.

In a high-trust environment where everyone is good at what they do and everyone respects one another, both are great. But more often than not, it feels like a flat structure just creates a massive amount of swirl and emotional labor because no one is willing to be the final say.
