Good/Great account people are worth their weight in gold, and I love them.
Unfortunately the vast majority of them are either useless or actively detrimental to the quality of the work.
It’s a tough job to do well.
I love my account people. Sorry you have bad ones.
Some are.
Others are underpaid strategists.
Didn’t used to be like that. And probably isn’t like that at the good agencies that have strong ECDs.

I appreciate a good account person much more than a strategist. I actually don’t think I‘ve ever worked with a strategist who actually helped to make the work better. Good account people are rare, but when you have one, they can make a great difference in selling and defending the work and also greasing the wheels with clients to have a better understanding of their needs.
as a strat there are lots of not so great people in every discipline. no need to pit one vs another
Noted!
Account people are paid to deal with comments like OPs, from every function. Thats our value
Amen to that
As a pm-turned-creative, y'all (most creatives) are so smug lmao.
You, my love, are in marketing, not the MoMA❤️ check yourself
True of many but not all
Sorry that’s been your experience. It is the norm but diamonds in the rough are still out here, caring deeply about the work and wanting to make it with you! Find us & hold us close!! 💎
The good account left the business or were deemed unaffordable a long time ago, and replaced by glorified PMs.
If you’re an underpaid PM just say that.
Not in my case. A good account person is account, pm, strategist, creative, client management, etc etc.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, we do multiple jobs all at once without bonuses and flat wage growth
Mine def don’t project manage lol
What’s a good account person in your opinion OP?
I think it always comes down to how they were trained. Great account leaders instill a sense of accountability and ownership - that they're as responsible for trying to get to great work as anyone else. But too many people are trained to just push papers and forward emails. And those are the lame ones.

I mean you’re not wrong but I am also capable of executing campaigns and presenting info to clients, not my fault my company doesn’t know how to scope people for the role haha
You mean “waiters.”
Most of the ones I worked with are bad at being PMs. They’re usually client order takers who don’t know ho to push back, with a knowledge of the production process.
Wait, people are getting overpaid in this industry?
