…3 week long pitches working through each weekend, stuck in the office until 10-12 am each night, maybe a Tuesday night off, eating cold Dominos pizza every other night that was ordered by a pm, wife text fighting me because I’m never home, and then having to take an uber home, its 12:30 am and the driver wants to talk about politics or god.
Thats how i remember it.
Seconded. This is the most mullen comment on fishbowl. That place took years off my life.
My daughter just got diagnosed with lymphoma and no one wears a mask anywhere. I’m incredibly glad I get to work remote and be home with her throughout her treatment.
Wishing her a speedy recovery.
oooof sorry. just you. I don't benefit from the "energy", it's more like ego and neuroticism.
I actually love my job and don’t mind my colleagues over IM and Zoom- but they’re just a bit too much for me in person.
I get out of the basement after work, right at 5, and see my friends— whose energy I very much enjoy.
I honestly don’t see much of a difference between brainstorming and presenting in person vs. over zoom. 🤷♂️

SA1 wut? Y'all come up with the most base excuses that make it hard to take you serious.
i hope you are the only one because, if you’re not, that will definitely ruin it for the rest of us.

Why can't the RTO crowd leave the rest alone? It sounds so needy 🤦🏻♂️
There's no need to justify why you want to and look to others for support.
Remote isn't going away, offices aren't going away.
We're each preaching to our own choirs, there's no rationale that will change people's minds and cause a sea change.
It's like the anti-maskers hating on the maskers when the maskers are quietly going about with their lives 😂 but the very idea of masks seen to trigger the other side.
(And that's just an analogy for the literal folks, not suggesting anyone here is an anti-masker or otherwise.)
(I also believe the concentration of humans in cities is unnatural and not how we were meant to live, despite being social animals. This is as medieval as geopolitical boundaries and daylight savings 🙄)

I haven't heard the WFH crowd blame the RTO crowd for anything at all. RTO crowd needs people to return. WFH crowd can go on remoting or they'll look for remote jobs. In this scenario, WFH are more flexible no?
This is all being said now because Covid numbers have diminished. And when they surge again how awesome are you gonna feel going back into an office? Can attest the culture at Edelman NY was abysmal before - zero private space or people fighting over conference rooms, sure there’s a roof deck but who the hell wants to go up there when you’re being pressured to be chained to said desks, etc. no amount of office events, free food or otherwise can drag me back. Do I miss seeing my coworkers sometimes? Sure. But also I’m not in my 20s and I could give two shits about getting plastered with them at happy hour. I’ve got a family now and could not be happier to be remote working. I work out, take long walks, take my dog to the park. I COOK for my wife. Working from home legit might have saved our marriage so no amount of “brainstorming” is gonna change my POV. And while we are at it, no advertising is curing cancer. So fuck the grind culture- it’s a new era with new boundaries.
This x1000.
I’d rather stab myself in the left titty with a butter knife than go back to the office full time.
We are returning to the office on hybrid next month and I want to sob. I don’t have the energy or patience for this crap. I went in for a half day last week and literally had to come hope and take a full blown nap because I don’t have the energy to always be “on” and “collaborative” and “social” anymore.
Well, yeah. Sorry you feel you gotta fake it. Nobody wants a fake. People see through that shit. Why is the real you so bad to be? I doubt it is.
My agency has it completely optional.
I we can stay home or go in, our choice.
So I'm doing half days. Mornings at home, office after lunch, and then the gym next to the office to end the day.
The flexibility is great.
Yea we do a stupid all agency meeting to talk about the work and stuff too 💀
Pro
My office is completely voluntary for in-office. They order everyone breakfast and lunch for everyone who comes in, there’s usually about 30+ people in. I go once a week, sometimes twice. Leave around 5. I enjoy it when I go.
This is the way to go! FCB makes everyone come in every Tue-Thu regardless of what they have going on and no kinda perks or incentives to get us there.
I know a magical place where all your dreams can come true three times a week.

If I like the place, I’d love to go in 2 or 3 days a week for sure.
I am excited to return to the office and see my peers. i think it helps me understand the people i work with better, especially on different teams (eg strat). the idea of working from home forever is sort of lame to me!
This app (and the style of faux-anonymous posting used here) probably selects a little more for introverts. My half-baked theory is that people are more likely to post things that they wouldn’t necessarily share with coworkers here (like dreading returning to the office), but they still get responses from people who are LIKE coworkers because agency life is pretty similar across the board. You can come to fishbowl to share a “negative” viewpoint, and get people to commiserate without any real consequences. For most people (people without badges at least), posts are indistinguishable from one another. the semblance of anonymity gives people the freedom to speak more about things that feel more taboo, and som e people just prefer to communicate that way
I don’t understand why the people who love the office can’t just… go in??? Why force everyone back arbitrarily? If fluorescent lighting and $18 salads from Sweetgreen is your jam, more power to you! Leave the rest of us alone!

It’s just you
Just you. I love being around people but I’d rather pick the people I’m around all day. I didn’t realize it until the pandemic but we spent so much time with coworkers that we didn’t choose. So I’m *good* with working from home, logging off asap and going to meet with friends after work and actually enjoying my life.

I'm excited to get back once or twice a week.
In person, face to face brainstorms, internals, etc, are much better.
Also, my book has 2 or 3 award winning projects that came about from casual conversations hanging out with coworkers that wouldn't have happened if we were remote.
I live in a studio apartment. I am enjoying the change of scenery three days a week. Plus, it’s nice to have people to chat with.
Here is my take… would love your thoughts…
With covid slowly waning out (god forbid another variant) companies are bringing people back in… they are simply taking their « time » because we are in an employees market. Employees leaving in droves for better pay etc…
That said, I have a feeling that once we go back to an employers market, cards will shuffle quicker than ever and being remote likely won’t be an option anymore (perhaps 1 day a week wfh at best)…. Companies are just pressured to keep their talent at the moment….
Chief
Totally. Once the market changes and there's less money around and the interest rates rise it will be w different story. But it seems shortsighted to RTO to enforce a surveillance culture and culture of presentism at the convenience of leadership who get autonomy and can work from wherever.
Amen! People are meant to work together. Maybe not every day, but it’s much more natural and collaborative. Working at home can be like living at the office—not very healthy.
Always nice when someone assumes what is "natural" to them is so for everyone. Privilege is fun like that.
My commute everyday is 2.5hrs round trip and monthly train pass is $300. I now have a life outside of work whereas before I only had 2 hrs to squeeze in me time and time with my girl (aka no me time st all). I don’t see myself going back into the office full time. Biggest scam by employers ever
