Faced this weird behaviour from Optum recently. Gave interview for Data Scientist position. HR said feedback is positive. Asked for documents. It's been month now since I have shared the documents. I have no update on the offer. Today I called HR, she called me back saying the position is on hold due to recalibration in team, She has shared interview feedbacks to other teams and will get back to me in couple of days. I am clueless now. My last working day is approaching (In a month). Any Help??

Yeah like I understand its benefit but it’s really not natural. Once you get used to it though I think you can use it to talk about even simple situations without embellishing dramatically.

As a project manager I get asked “tell us about a time a project went off the rails”? Simple question. The problem is for over 16 years I never had a project “off the rails”. I had to tell stories about doing a project during Covid that had changing deliverables and no end date or picking up a project that was off the rails before I came on board and I got back on track.

Well it is story telling. It’s a structured way to communicate your experience to someone who has no clue about you or your skills. “
You are describing what you did. Everyone does that. Everyone looks at logs and deploy a fix. Why should they select you?
Was the bug urgent ? Was it breaking something critical ? What if it wasn’t fixed by you in time. People make a big deal out of the method while don’t realized it is a logical way to describe your experience to someone. If you have to invent stuff, then you don’t qualify for the job that you are interviewing for. You are basically saying whatever you do is useless and has no significance at all. “I look at a logs” - nobody cares about that.
It can an entertaining exercise, when it isn't exhausting. I just look at it as explaining your business value. You’ve got experiences and skills that you need to talk about. You need an organized way to recall them easily.
You need to tell a story that others can tell for you. A recruiter hit me over the head when he said “What should I tell them to sell you?” I should have been able to give him 2 or 3 solid stories right then.
STAR draws a straight line: A situation needed to be addressed, I did something that saved someone’s time or the company’s money, or made someone more productive or the company more profitable. That’s it.
