I ran Boston in 2019, BQ’d with a 3:26. Currently holding a 3:19 for 2021, but hoping to beat that in six weeks if they don’t cancel my race. Also female, but have eight years on you :)
First, if you want to run Boston, you’re gonna need better than 3:30. Train for a 3:25 or better.
Second, yes to the running club. It’ll get you out of bed on the weekends for the long runs.
Third, don’t be scared to run in the mornings. I have, in NYC, Jersey City, Chicago, Washington DC, Detroit, Charlotte, Atlanta... I’m not saying don’t be smart, but don’t be scared either. Find out where other people run. Find a run group in your client city. Don’t run the same course at the same time every day. Ask around at the client. Might find a running buddy. You can’t take 20 minutes off your marathon if you don’t run during the week.
I BQ’d using Hal Higdon’s Advanced II (with some modification because I know myself well). I ran the 3:19 using a combination of Tinman philosophy and Higdon. Current training is combination of a coach and my own knowledge of my body, but is pretty intensive. Generally, I do two qualitative speed workouts and a long run a week, and plenty of easier runs. PM me if you want my strava for workout ideas.
Good luck and happy running!
Consider joining a local running group for support for your long Saturday/Sunday runs. Use the treadmill while traveling for sprints and building speed.
I did! Thankfully, M here and working in a very pleasant area so I never felt unsafe with early or late runs. With the daylight savings time switch, it’ll be lighter later. Are you able to protect time in the evenings? Could be something that you start the day slightly earlier than others but set the expectation that you’re offline in the early evening while the sun is still out?
So far out from a qualifying race, you want to focus on building a good fitness base. You may be closer to shaving off 13min than you think. My times dropped significantly once I structured my training. Finding a running buddy makes it even fun. Focus on putting on simple volume during the week - on treadmill if possible - and plan for quality workouts on Friday and Sunday. Training on the road is hard so kudos for pursuing that goal!
Have you considered working with a coach? I used one last year and it was super helpful!
Thanks!! And I’d love to get insight on which training methods/plan you used.
