After a break up, I'm meeting people again now.
How do I not compare them with my ex?

If you are going to compare them to your ex, you are not ready to date.

likesmarthelpful

As1 how is it fair to expect OP to date someone who doesn’t meet their standards? It’s not fair to force them to date someone who doesn’t meet their standards of a partner, which the Ex has set.

If you’re still comparing, you’re clearly not over it. Take some time off to spend by yourself in solitude so that the next person you date doesn’t feel weighed upon because the comparison you make will involuntarily eventually show in your behaviour as well. Breakups hurt; rebounds hurt more!

like

You’re not allowed to have standards and want someone better or equal to who you previously dated? Why is OP forced to date someone worse?

like

Instead of comparing to this person, you should make a list (mental or written) of the traits you do and don’t want in a partner. Then you compare them to your list.

likehelpful

That's actually really good advice. Compare to your list rather than some person.
Really, very good advice. thank you

like

What is the direction of comparison?

"Oh great this person is totally not like my ex" or "I wish this person were more like my ex?"

Could be helpful to figure out what you do and don't like about your ex and use those descriptors instead of making ex comparisons.
"Oh this person loves criterion collection movies and enjoys museums - they really value learning new things."

like

Good point. My ex was great so it's more so hoping the next person would be as good.

Does that make sense?

like

Sure, but what made them good/great? What made them not so great? Drill down on your answers so you have an understanding of what you're looking for specifically vs is this person as good as my ex?

like

I was trying to avoid drilling down too much so I can move on

Your ex has set a baseline for you, and that’s your own standards. It’s perfectly fine to have standards in my opinion. If someone you meet doesn’t quite meet the standards, then I wouldn’t see that as “comparing”, but more of a “I can do better than that”.

Similar to job searches. If you just quit a job that paid 150K/year, you would naturally compare future job offers to that. And you should seek offers >= 150K/year.

like

It’s called an analogy. No one said people are the same thing as jobs. Let me simplify it for you: what’s being compared is the act of SEARCHING for a job vs SEARCHING for a partner. Searching vs searching. NOT job vs people. Why interpret everything for its literal meaning, and not the message behind it?

“Tommy had 500 apples, he ate 300 apples how many apples does he have left?”
I bet you’re the type who will answer with “tOmMy CanT EaT tHat ManY aPpLeS”

What’s wrong with comparing? Seems like something reasonable to do.

How does a person change their mindset to be more positive? I feel like I’m meant for my job, but blame all my life problems on it….having no energy, being single at the age of 30, etc. and it seems like a never ending loop. I look for new jobs, realize I have a good job then am ok for a bit then start it all over again. When I’m off of work I’m fine and realize I have it pretty good. Only real negative is I can’t vacation with my family in March due to my busy time.

I give massive kudos to all the parents out there juggling work and home life. But it’s starting to feel like I pulled the short stick by not having a kid. Really struggling to pick up all of the slack from all of the colleagues that do have kids and feel like the expectation is that parents should turn off while the rest are working from 7am - 2am everyday to make up for it.

This is super weird but I feel like I can’t relate easily to people. Hear me out - I moved and lived in different continents, countries every 5 years or so until now… I feel like I’m an outlier and my life is super different from anyone else’s. I have some friends I’ve met at each stage of my life, but it’s been temporary. I feel like I’m always going in a different direction than others. It makes it difficult to have a stable life and close friends..

I’m (early30s) about 8 months into a relationship with a 40m. Things are wonderful in every aspect, but he is absolutely atrocious with his finances. I felt it becoming an issue about two months ago. He forgets about auto payments and just generally doesn’t care. I sat down with him and looked at everything and even after talking it out he still continues to stress and it’s now causing me stress. I had a final discussion with him today about it and he went on abt how love isn’t enough for me…

I am an m&a junior at a firm that is generally considered a lifestyle firm (pay below market but target hours are lower unless pushing for partner). Over the pandemic period, we have had so many senior associates and paralegals leave that there is no one to ask questions to and I’m doing paralegal work (we are all in survival mode). I’m not convinced the partners in my team (who are aware of the problem but cannot convince management) can recruit people to replace given we pay below market.
