Any tips on getting out of document review?
I’m at the end of my ropes with this job. I had a job at my local prosecutor’s office after the bar (class of 2017) where I made $35,000. I left after 3 months to work in private practice because I wanted to be able to survive on my salary and not live in my parent’s basement (no success there). I did criminal defense and domestic relations cases and was absolutely miserable. I quit after 3 months and went into document review and now I’m stuck.

The problem is that you have to commit to a job for a few years, which you haven’t, or else you look like a job hopper. It sounds like you didn’t go to a T14 or even T1 school so large law firm jobs are out. (And even then, you’d probably be doing doc review, just not a first-level review and for much higher pay.) So you are doing the other distribution of law firm job: concentrated around $60k. The prosecutor’s office job paid badly but sounds like it would have given you some hands on experience in litigation. It could have been a stepping stone to something much better.

I would apply for clerkships, etc. even at the state court level or bankruptcy court level and try to find a path out that way. An LLM in Tax or Bankruptcy is also an option if you had good law school grades and wouldn’t mind Big 4 work if that’s all you can get.

It’s hard to get private practice employers to touch doc review resumes like yours. I would also consider relocating out of state to a more robust legal ecosystem since your state sounds like it has very low wages and probably not a high developed legal economy.

Agree with A1. Or you’ll have to try again at a small firm and get the experience. Or maybe you don’t practice law and instead work for companies that offer legal services. Or start your own firm. There’s lot of options.

Anyone have experience on consulting to law school? Big 4 consulting to law school more specifically potentially? Curious as to what you’ve heard about how the transition is. Cost, time, relationship effects. Curious to hear others experiences. Also haven’t sat or studied for the LSAT fully yet. Already have a master’s that’s not impacting my salary in my consulting field yet at B4. Can’t seem to shake that law school inkling in the back of my brain still.

I have an offer from a energy trading firm in their traded risk tech team. Its a good offer (8 YOE), 85k+20%+good benefits.. I also received an offer from EY's traded risk quantitative advisory. They proposed a pretty low-ball offer, which I am trying to negotiate. I am sure it will still be less than the other. From career progression pov, what do u think about future prospects of role at EY, I am inclined to take EY's offer.
