Can you try directing or producing? Your understanding of film may translate really well into those roles. I worked at a big NY agency that has a few Producers who are also Editors and in-house Directors. It works pretty seamlessly as these roles are within the same department. They’re all really talented and one was signed by a production company and is now a full time Director.
Definitely true. I’ve directed in the past and it’s not something I’ve felt confident enough to move towards in this position.
I’ve seen editors transition to directing, but I’ve never seen someone go into the AD/CD path. Maybe your agency is set up differently than where I’ve been, but do you have some experience developing concepts off a brief? Do you know a CD there well who will brief you in on a project or two to see how it goes?
I think it is kind of atypical, yes. But there’s nothing wrong with that. Lots of people have unusual paths in this industry and people only like them more for it, if they care at all. Give it a shot and see what happens, find out if it’s something you’d enjoy or not! You have a somewhat rare opportunity and it makes sense to see if it’s something you want to pursue. Also, I thought about it more and I think there’s a pretty similar path that I actually have seen work this way before. Some social-focused agencies embed “content creators” into the creative team who do video editing, sometimes shooting and help develop concepts. I know a guy who started in that role and then moved into AD/CD path from it. So it’s probably not all that uncommon.
In before AD and CD aren’t interchangeable. I know I have the creative potential to excel in a broader creative role but I’m not sure what that would look like for me yet — hence asking for others experiences!
My shop & core team is hybrid/full service and diversification is encouraged, so it is feasible within my current team.

Sounds like an adjacent could be content? Branded, social, TikTok, etc. It's all videos these days.
