Anyone lived in Seattle? Referred for a job at Amazon, but have never been to Seattle before. How is the weather, diversity, cost of living, etc?

Amazon has an extremely toxic environment. Some people thrive but most do not. Consider very carefully.

Seattle is gorgeous. Great culture, lots to do outdoors. COLA has been increasing but still reasonable. It drizzles/ overcast most months, but it's picturesque and green in the sunshine. Liberal city, diversity (60/35/5) white/Asian/black. Culture is pretty environmentally minded/ liberal (fairly granola). Culture is *reminiscent* to SF/Austin / Portland if you've been there

like

Cost of living is outrageous. Great city tho.

like

I think it's beautiful but rarely do you see the sun.

I am there on a project now and have been living there for about 7 weeks. Depends on what your interests are. Seattle is a vibrant city with a great outdoor scene. Great sports town. Cost of living .... depends where you are coming from. Compared to NYC/SF/LA-- not high, compared to Texas --- its high. Weather is grey, doesn't rain as much as people say it does but definitely more than usual. Blue state, people seem to be open minded and relatively friendly. Would live there if family was near.

like

I was confused when I was there because there didn't seem to be much nightlife and tons of homeless people came out at night. Also everything closed super early. I'm from New York so may have just been in the Times Square equivalent.

like

Worst place. Rain everyday which will make u to hate yourself.

like

More toxic than the big 4, @P2?

like

Great nightlife. Try College Hill.

like

I've heard that. There was a huge exposé/ article that released about it a few months ago

like

Seattle's beautiful but the previous posts are right - turned down an offer to be a brand specialist there because the people told me the atmosphere was cutthroat and frustrating

like

Lived around the world and Seattle is a good mix. Remember no state income tax in WA, so compared to CA where I was before, cost of living for comparable place and commute is considerably less. Yes, it's grey for a few months but no local carries an umbrella as it's more drizzle than rain. The great summers (not too hot) and snow sports 1-2 hours from the city more than make up for it in my opinion. But be cautious with Amazon, per the comments above.

like

Re: Amazon's culture- very dependant on the team. Do your due diligence on the folks you will be working for/with.

As for seattle- people think it rains a lot, not really. Fewer inches of rain than many other cities like NYC but it is very cloudy from Oct to June. It is much farther north than people realize so in Dec and Jan sunrise is after 7am and sunset is as round 4pm. Short days combined with clouds is what drives most people crazy.

Secret challenge with Seattle is that it is hard to break in. People aren't as welcoming to new comers as other cities.

That being said, fantastic outdoor recreation. Climate allows outdoor activities/sports 365 days/year. Good food, entertainment. Much cheaper than most blue state coastal cities.

Highest suicide rates in the country!

Yeah that was released in aug 2015. Luckily I wouldn't be in the tech side or in the warehouse. I'm sure the intense and horrible culture isn't just in those areas, but I've made it through Deloitte & PwC, so I've had my fair share of it already.

I wouldn't discount the environment warnings just because you aren't in tech or the warehouse. I've got a friend in supply chain / marketing type role and his experiences are far more intense and cut throat than mine or our engineer / dec friends up at Amazon. I think it is highly dependent on the group and leadership you are within. But Seattle is a very popular place to be moving to now and a lot of people really love it there. Personally I need to see the sun more than they get.

Seattle is amazing if you like outdoors. Good culture and people. Cost of living is cheap, but rising. Great food. If I didn't have family in the Midwest and east coast I'd move there in a ny minute. Also there are tons of jobs-Amazon, zulilly, Costco, Nordstrom, safeco, tmobile, Microsoft, Boeing... you'll never be unemployed.

Yes! The stretching of "diversity” seems to be such a widespread symptom of this industry’s fear of addressing the uncomfortable realities of race within it. A distraction? Very “All Lives Matter” ...

Lots of right wing hysteria about liberals trying to engineer equality of outcome to correct sexual/racial inequities (in higher ed, for example). I think we all want socioeconomic, gender and racial barriers to opportunities to be addressed, but no significant number of people really believe in equality of outcome right? This is just a straw man argument.

The problem with diversity is they focus on a quota rather than changing the culture of marginalized groups in the office. So often people speak over me, take credit for my ideas... and it's accepted.

Kind of a quick rant. I did a quick search through some firms websites because I am thinking of switching jobs. It is definitely clear most firms still do not embrace diversity. I know diverse applicants must be just as qualified! So what is keeping attorneys of color out?? It’s so discouraging.
