anyone regret making the jump from agency to in-house? Why or why not?

Agency for almost 10 years, made the hop over to brand last year. Different challenges but I’m less anxious. Work is less sexy but I’m more stable.

I worked 6-7 years agency until I was fatigued. I also felt like I wasn’t growing anymore. I’m happy that I was able to work on a variety of different client projects working at an agency but it gets pretty repetitive after a while. Now that I’m in-house there’s much more of a learning curve from a business perspective but I like that I’m able to sit closer to our consumers and actually see the impact of my work. Working in-house you see the bigger picture whereas agency life was really from an outside perspective

I flipped around 3 weeks ago, and I’d say don’t blindly assume that in-house is always better work life balance. Not noticing that in the hiring process is causing some light regret, but it’s been largely positive otherwise. From my short experience though, here’s what I’ve noticed.

Cons:

Your colleagues won’t uniformly respect creative. That clueless client who always threw last minute wrenches into the final stages of pre-pro is now Mike from the ecomm team, and he now has a direct line to you.

You’re more likely to encounter creatives who have become complacent, and are less committed to craft than agency side.

Pros:

Companies are more likely to end an agency contract than they are to lay off half of their own staff, so I do see it as safer these days.

The biggest positive I see though is that it allows for creative focus and autonomy you won’t get agency side. It’s nice to know that there are usually fewer go-betweens to worry about killing everything good about a concept.

At the end of the day, if you hate it I think you’ve got a solid 1-2 years before you’re risking not being able to easily make the switch back.

Mike from e-comm!! I’ve been at the same in house gig for 9yrs and am only just remembering that I used to work with people who respect creative. I have a great boss who often tries to ground this phenomena as not a respect issue but good god it always feels like it is.

No regrets. Nice people, insane perks and I’m making $150k more than I would have agency side.

When I went in-house I thought there’d be less process. More chance at creativity. What I’ve found is that they still shipped the really creative work out and we handled the boring, pixel pushing day-to-day work.

I don’t regret the jump! I finally get to experience this amazing thing called ✨work life balance✨

like

No regrets. Happy I made the move.

I’ve never met anyone who regretted this. I personally prefer to control the project and budget vs having to be at someone’s call. And I like better pay and benefits.

Yes because I just got laid off after 3 months when they axed the whole marketing team ☹️

Hi all, I just got a job offer at PwC for a senior consultant position. The salary is 30% above my total comp right now, but I’m just worried about the amount of work I will have to put in compared to my amazing work life balance now. Does anyone have any experience moving from industry to consulting? I need some advice on what to do. I’m still early in my career (1.4yoe) so I feel like I shouldn’t care too much about wlb, but at the same time, I don’t want my mental health to suffer either.

Currently working as an in-house SEO for a big ecommerce company (fortune 500). Currently earning 65K CAD. Contemplating a position for SEO manager on another company, SaaS B2B, very small office (<50people), pay around 80-100K. It's not a startup.

Did anyone made a move like this? From a big company (SEO team has 5+ people) to a very small company? I'm worried about job security and how stressful this new position would be, considering I'll be the only SEO professional there.

Hi everyone - We are thinking of changing our wedding photographer after unsatisfactory engagement photos and unsatisfactory communication (unresponsive after multiple attempts). We paid a $450 retainer which we know will be not refundable. However, we are not sure about other liability as we read our contract and found these 2 clauses (in comments). Please advise! Any tips on how to deal with this…my entire team was let go today (was 5, now just me). We functioned as the Marketing team for 4 brands and primarily focused on product launches and sustaining social media content. My plan moving forward is to only focus on the top revenue driving product launches for now and say “no” to basically everything else. Would love to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation and can offer some advice.
