It’s not frowned upon, but if you aren’t currently a SM then another big 4 won’t give you that title. If you’re an experienced manager, you can negotiate that you want to come in with the YOE and be a candidate for SM in the next promotion cycle, assuming you are a strong performer.
Yep big 4 tax
1. How much support have you built up with Partners at current firm that will make SM decision? Is it worth giving that up? Or are they jerks who would RIF you at the slightest downturn and not shed a tear?
2. Is current firm growing and able to make new SMs? Is new firm growing?
3. Are you specialized? Do you like your current industry and clients? Does the new firm play in that industry or would you be in a new industry?
4. What do your peers say about the current and new firm assuming both are in the same market area? If Managers can’t wait to bail on new firm that is a bad sign. Which way is talent moving-toward or away from your current firm?
5. Can you be independent of new firms audit clients? Or does your spouse work for and have a lot of stock in an audit client of new firm?
6. You are likely vested in 401k at current firm, but make sure you don’t lose any money or have to pay back signing bonus.
I would not fancy hopping to another b4 in this market, unless your service line is super busy.
