Are there any Big Four tax folks here who have successfully transitioned to something else? After four years of federal tax for corporate financial services clients, I’m thinking this next busy season will be my last and I’m going to break out of tax compliance one way or another.

I left PwC in 2020 to work on the business side of a federal contractor and have never looked back. There’s a lot of other things out there that use your business/accounting background that also allow you to have a life.

There are a lot of federal and state jobs that value a public accounting background. Look around on your state websites and if you have any federal facilities nearby. Some have civil service exams some don’t. I did take a big pay cut leaving PwC but it was worth the work life balance and decreasing my commute time from 2 hours to 10 minutes. After only 4 years I’m back to making what I was when I left, and my benefits are better.

There are a few colleagues that left for the IRS - I would look into IRS’s LB&I group, though there’s a freeze in hiring at the moment

Goodluck!

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.

At what point are you too specialized to lateral to internal audit? (PA, consulting, or industry roles) Currently have 2 years of external audit experience and 2 years of forensics: I always thought of internal audit as a decent exit but I’m beginning to get worried about getting too specialized to make that move one day

My company went toxic in the last couple months. Chose me and started interviewing. Had a very successful interview with Amazon but recruiter is working hard trying to place me and said there’s no knowing how long to find a team. Meanwhile I just received a Director offer for a company with a 29% pay bump July 1. If Amazon or any other FAANG/large co gets back to me, is there an acceptable way to not burn bridges with new job and accept or delay start date with FAANG? Or fuck it just hop?

Need serious advice. Been a Digital Strategy consultant for three years, heavy focus on product strategy, research, development. It’s a small but global consultancy (offices in nyc, brasil, colombia). Last whole year been acting as a technical lead on strategy for a team of 40+ consultants across different industries and even sold new projects including new clients considered unicorns. Can I go to MBB as a consultant and/or project lead? My salary is way below average big 4/MBB… don’t have MBA.

Why is education deemed more valuable on a pay scale than experience? Employers will pay someone with a degree and no experience a greater salary, than someone who has exhibited the experience. Are private companies easier to work at than public companies in accounting? We have such an accelerated close deadline at the publicly traded company I’m at now, I really hate the inflexible tight deadlines and analysis seems to drag on forever after that. We also close AP/AR very early in the month yet that doesn’t stop payments/receipts from happening so we’re constantly adjusting our accruals until the end of month. Do private companies start their close after the month actually ends?
