Got to the agency and they said “all of our conference rooms are full.” So they proceeded to interview me at a table in the middle of a 50 person, silent, bullpen room. All 50 people could hear every response and most of them were watching me. Most nerve wracking experience of my life.
Any time I hear “scrappy” or “gritty” it raises a red flag in my head....in my experience it’s usually meant these agencies cut corners (usually bypassing strategy) or are just willing to bend over for any client request
"Hi welcome to Vayner."
“The agency is in rebuild process and you are going to have a lot of opportunities because of that."
I once was asked to take a MS Windows and Office proficiency test. As a creative.
Red flag-thank you for your time.
We even have a sleep room.
When an account person interviews a creative it’s generally a bad sign about the agency’s power structure and focus.
@AD2 couldn’t disagree more. Creatives don’t work in a vacuum.
I went to an interview last week set up by a recruiter, and the agency asked what I’d been told about the role, and then told me there actually wasn’t one but wanted to meet anyway. The fuck 😫
They asked what my SAT score was. I’m 25.
EP opened the interview with “So I’m a dick”.
People who are late or reschedule you more than 2x... always a sign
I had a guy once explain his entire creative philosophy without explaining the job I was interviewing for. Didn’t even bother to ask me what I’m looking for/what I like to do.
Once had a CD basically spend the whole interview bragging about his own artwork (aka telling me he didn’t really care about the company he was at).
I’ve had people come late and cancel at the last minute. The worst was when I was presenting to a room and I spotted some people on their phones.
When my potential boss doesn’t respect my time or doesn’t show interest in me as a person, it’s an immediate “no” for me.
Agency in Texas - first thing they said to me was “You’re a republican, right?” They were not joking. I got up and left.
A CD told me I’d never want to work on any of the other accounts other than the one I was applying for because they all suck
An office director spent entire phone interview telling me why I wouldn’t be a good fit, kept asking me to remind him of specific experience because he didn’t have my resume in front of him, belittled my experience and answers, and then GOT IN HIS CAR to commute home for the final :15 mins of our pre-scheduled interview. I was interviewing for a SVP role. A-hole much dude? HR def got my full feedback. I’d say that whole experience was a giant red flag.
I got pulled into a conference room with four super aggressive men on the other side of the table rapid-firing questions at me. It was like being in front of a firing squad. They hired someone else and the job was posted again a couple of months later. I'm guessing that the person they hired NOPED out of that mess.
Did a Skype interview for a job on the other side of the country and had three account people interview me at once. One of them couldn't be bothered to be in front of the camera when she spoke to me and I struggled to hear her. When I got feedback afterwards from the recruiter (past two interviews with creatives went very well) he said they felt I "had a hard time communicating clearly and weren’t answering questions directly." That was when I said forget it, this isn't the place for me.
“So when did you learn to speak French fluently?” I do not speak French, never spoke French and have no idea how I wound up in a room for a French speaking role. Recruiters are the worst.
One place said the word “scrappy” and I noped out of that one.
Different place was obviously snippy that my current agency had won a pitch over them, and proceeded to try an shit on said agency.
