I didn’t know better when he first reached out and ended up on a handful of his matters. Let’s say he’s been killing me with his demands and working styIe. Possible to destaff myself from his matters all at once? All do I have to roll off one by one when each picks up again in the future by saying I am too busy rn?

My group’s billable hours have been low the last few years, so making partner will be nearly impossible, and a counsel position is not viable long-term in my group. What’s the best option here if partnership is the ultimate goal? I know that some other associates at my level are approximately 30% behind other associates in hours on a month to month basis. Yet all of these associates say they are “at capacity”, and myself and another associate still end up being assigned work instead of them. How do we handle this? For reference, all associates are around the firms minimum requirement, it’s just that a few of us are 30+% over and it is leading to burnout.
