Yeah I don't feel bad about it either, it's partially social anxiety and partially I just don't care to hang with co-workers outside of the office.
Look, I’m an introvert and I face social anxiety all the time. That said, I now speak at conferences, I have done a 2 year long stint in sales - successfully, I might add - the point is, if you don’t put yourself out there, not all the time, but on occasion , you won’t develop the mechanisms to deal with the anxiety to figure out how to overcome it.
Go to the team dinners, sit at the corner seat, observe and chime in when it feels right - better still, start a conversation on a debatable topic, say a few points and then let the others take it away. They’ll see you as a team member, a conversationalist and also as someone they should pay attention to.
You need to do it - get yourself - and all the others that also done get out there - get out there. You will be better for it - in time.
I skip them all the time and don’t feel guilty at all haha.. but I’m such a nonentity nobody seems to notice my absence anyways lol
I don’t attend ANY team dinner or events. You’re not missing out on anything - work relationships are built more effectively during 1:1 convos rather than team dinners and happy hours.
Dont feel guilty about spending unpaid time at work.. ive recently started going to them but before that I never went and didnt feel bad about it lol
I dont attend - not because of social anxiety, just dont have the energy to! I have an occasional pang of guilt but have been getting better. If you are introverted and need your recharge time at home, you have to claim it! No one will give it to you

Not socially anxious but I freaking hate them. And used to force myself to go until I stopped caring about my job. Maybe set a rule for yourself that is very obtainable such as 1 team dinner per month.
I have other personal priorities that I need to attend to. I am not interested in a free meal.
How do you guys skip? We only have 1 car onsite and I don’t want to be the only person that ubers home every night.
