A well-designed case study that applies to the role can show whether or not the candidate can apply their experience. It also weeds out those with good looking resumes who aren’t actually good candidates.
But when a generic case is used for roles it doesn’t apply to, I agree that it’s not a good path to go down and may disqualify good candidates.
Agreed.
If your experience hasn't prepared you to get your way through a case, then you shouldn't be hired. (Unless you're a technical resource)
We have to think on our feet and solve problems quickly in consulting often. Case interview totally makes sense
Agree. I'm not even in strategy and I'm reading case in point to teach myself to think differently/efficiently
I’m starting to get the feeling you did poorly on a case interview and just want to vent....what happened?
Do not agree, if you are a SME in an industry random cases like how many golf balls will fit in an airplane kind of questions are pointless. Ask me about how to grow a financial organization or ( just an example) I will answer that. Doesn’t have to be cookie cutter framework type of answers
It is ok D1, OP is probs salty because he cannot get into a better consulting firm
Experience is fine for industry. To succeed in consulting, you have to be able to apply critical thinking skills, as the problems/situations you may see are unique each time. I don’t want to know what you’ve done; I want to understand how you think so that we know what you’re capable of. Case interviews test this capability in candidates.
You can continue to think they are stupid, moan/argue here and you’re entitled to your opinion, but as with many things in our industry, opinions only get you so far.
If you really want to make a difference, get involved in the recruiting and interviewing with your firm and learn for yourself what the best mechanisms are for evaluating candidates
Well, the vast majority of people aren’t one-dimensional. It’s not “he’s good at case interviews, so he probably has no idea how to interact with sales and marketing”
Most of our firms can pare down candidates however we want - why would we choose a candidate who is weak on cases and strong on other skills when we can select one who’s good at everything?
And I doubt any firm is making a hiring decision unilaterally on case interviews anyway - most of us just want a basic competence
Its just testing how well you memorized a framework. Just like the SAT used to determine how intelligent you are, now its a pissing contest to see who can spend to most on tutoring and memorizing question structures.
