Privacy is very complex and appears to be a constantly shifting desert of obligations, expectations, definitions, and prohibitions. I think there are a lot of folks who suffer from Imposter syndrome (myself included) because it’s easy to find yourself in an email thread or conversation (or god forbid put on the spot by a client) about a niche topic that you haven’t had a chance to read up on and form an opinion about. Whenever I find myself in that position I have to remind myself to lean on privacy first principles and tackle the issue from that general point of view, then drill down into the nuance in my own time.
It is easy to feel this way with privacy law, in particular. It constantly is changing and in many cases, trying to achieve elusive, sometimes impossible perfection on the compliance front doesn’t really matter for all practical purposes. But then sometimes it does. It is a perfect recipe for feeling like an imposter who is being gaslit constantly. Just keep plugging away and learning.
Same. Also in privacy.
Same. Every dang day. I’ve only been doing this for three years.
Everyday. In privacy, first privacy lawyer for my org.
100%. The age old question: am I experiencing imposter syndrome, or just a healthy sense of humility?
As with many areas, you cannot know everything. Especially when it’s constantly changing and evolving.
