I was in a similar situation, though my choice was an Am200 firm or a fed dist ct clerkship. A clerkship is not something every lawyer has. It’s seen as invaluable perspective for a young lawyer to see how a judge thinks/operates, and can give you more insight than you know. It also exposes you to the internal systems of the federal courts, which is somewhere you’ll likely be at a biglaw firm. You feel more comfortable reaching out to a court clerk if needed, and people will ask you about how to approach cases that may be in the district you clerked in depending on the judge. Do the clerkship. It helps separate you further too if you ever decide to lateral.
Not to sound like the biggest a-hole ever, but if you are hesitant about a district court clerkship, then pass it over and let someone who genuinely wants it get it. If you need randoms on fb to tell you why its "a good idea," you shouldn't be taking it. Again, I am honestly not trying to be a jerk. But clerkships are a privilege, and an extraordinarily small percentage of lawyers are fortunate enough to have that opportunity. Biglaw will always be there. Your time in chambers will not.
In that case, go big law. Clerking is terrible and definitely not worth it. best of luck :)
Clerk. The experience is invaluable and it will make you a better lawyer in so many ways. You gain knowledge, skills, connections, etc. You can always go big law the next year. And big law rewards clerkships.
Clerking on your resume is great for future endeavors (e.g., US attorney's office, judgeship, solicitor general office, amd selling point for clients), but during that year at the clerkship you definitely will sacrifice pay, even though you'll likely make it right back with post-clerkship signing bonus. I took a 30% pay cut for my district court clerkship. But if you don't wana sacrifice during that year, then definitely choose BL offer.
