I’m a non client facing MD. The process is the same as for those in client facing roles. The important thing I’ve realized is to have a very solid and specific business case - ie a good solid reason why your role needs to be an MD vs continuing an SM.
The unfortunate response is that “it depends” :) it comes back to having a specific business case for the role you expect to have. That being said, many non client facing MDs I know have had to add other things to their portfolio, especially those on teams with more than one MD.
Wait 6-8 years and hope for the best

There are! They are in alliance role, greenhouse lab, chief of staff, QRM, delivery excellence, innovation, etc. it is possible especially if it’s highly visible role to the leadership
