Did everyone have leadership training or preparation before or right after they landed their first leadership position or were you left to figure things out for yourself?

Does anyone ever get leadership training? I’ve always seen that people who go on leadership development programmes never make it to be leaders but the people who do just kind of end up in those roles without training

like

Bahahaha, nope. Trial by fire, figure it out is majority of how most companies are. Not saying it’s right but that’s the truth of it. Finding a good mentor(s) is what is the most helpful. This is not usually your immediate boss.

like

Hi!
Does your company have a Learning & Development department/program? Or anyone in the company who is in charge of trainings?
Some companies have a very clear support system while some others let you figure it out on your own (which is, obviously, not ideal).

You may want to have a chat with your HR/your manager and ask what support they can offer. If they cannot support you, they might be able to support you financially for you to hire an external professional on your own.
Some of my Clients have their companies finance our work together (coaching).

Alternatively, you may want to consider hiring someone on your own.

Wish you all the best! :)

If you’d like to chat further, feel free to message me/connect on LI.

None. Not in my first leadership role, and never since, either.

No leadership training, but after becoming a manager at two large companies, both had required first year manager training that I found really valuable. But I love to learn (I’m the person that listens to manager focused podcasts and reads leadership books in my spare time), and I’ve discovered that for most in these trainings you get out of it what you put in to it. Many managers do it to the check the box. So even though it’s there, it’s often not fully utilized.

Just out here winging it!

Is this normal process? Has anyone gone through similar experience?

Senior attorneys at v100, how common is it for attorneys who start at small firms to lateral to biglaw? Have you worked with any? Conventional wisdom is always that if you don’t start there it’s hard to “trade up”. My coworker and I just did it to two different great v30 firms, and I’m wondering if it’s really that uncommon? Just out of curiosity. We’re not special counsel with special niche skills or anything, just associates. Pitfalls to beware? Positives?

Our annual reviews are approaching & one of my direct reports has been with us for almost six years w/ little growth. My reco was to let him go & find a stronger, hungrier & more motivated designer at the same level. However, my boss instead wants us to promote him in hopes that will spark some motivation. I am not behind this decision & have voiced my multitude of concerns in promoting an employee who doesn't deserve it. HR is behind the decision! Thoughts on promoting an undeserving report?

"Everybody can be a leader" some say... "Leaders are nurtured not born" say others... True.

But... this is also true: "not everybody wants to be a leader" (whether they can or can't be). It is a fairly common practice in organizations with traditional career management structures for people to "be promoted" into leadership roles as the "end steps of the corporate ladder" that was climbed doing technical work. And, unfortunately, this doesn't work all the time
