Do you ever regret getting out of the military (if you didn't retire)?

In the first year or two post-transition, yes. It’s natural to feel the pull back to it because you’re thinking about the people and self-actualization and being part of a team doing an important mission. You’re not thinking about the times you’re an hour early for a brigade run because every echelon wants you there ten minutes earlier instead of treating you like an adult. You’re not thinking about the tasking that comes down at 1600 that’s going to keep you there late when you’ve had little to do all day. You’re not thinking about watching a grown man pee into a cup and making sure he has car insurance and inflated tires before a long weekend.

Nostalgia is tough, and it’s not to be trusted. Even a decade on, there are days I almost wish I were back in Afghanistan with the boys, but it’s a trap. I make more than a GO, get to enjoy time with my family, and have substantially more freedom in my day to day life.

Be happy and proud you did it, and find meaning in the next chapter.

Well said

Sometimes I miss doing bad sh*t with the boys, but then I recall that positive memory bias is real. So I sit out in the cold rain for a few hours cleaning something that I know is already clean, and then I’m cured.

likefunny

Sometimes but then I look at my paycheck and it makes it all better

like

Sometimes

Not even a little bit. Sure I was with some incredible people but literally every aspect of my current job and life is better, has been since getting out.

What’d you do when you were in? What’re you doing at GOOG?

Yes

Sometimes. But I’ll remember what I would have missed out on (kids growing up)

Oh absolutely not, disability pay, GI bill. More than doubling salary with that new GI Bill degree.

Don’t have to chase down some O4 to sign a leave chit anytime I want to hop on a plane. Thanks for the memories but smell ya later military.

All, I’ve been a lawyer for six years plus a judicial clerkship. While I love the law, I pretty much hate the current practice of it. I’m looking to do something with my law degree but not necessarily stay in practice. Any suggestions? Every time I look I get so overwhelmed that I stop looking.

I cannot get an interview to save my life. Mind you, I was working FOR FREE as it was a school connected externship. That made me never want to work in the law.
